At this point, are you getting Windows 8?

At first I was one of those people who felt "helpless" and absolutely hated Windows 8. But now, after having some time with it and learning the ins and outs, I am really starting to enjoy it. There are a lot of cool features, and while, I'm not particularly fond of it, metro is starting to work out for me. Still don't see much point in deploying it in a business/managed environment though. For $40, it's a steal. It's worth buying a couple copies at that price. As I've found over the years, having a couple extra copies of Windows around is never a bad thing. Not to mention it's a cheap way to upgrade XP machines.

So. Are you getting it?

I'm witholding vote since I use Debian, and have little interest in Windows, but If I ran Windows, I'd buy a copy for $40. It's worth having, even if you intended to stay with Win7, or whatever. It helps to keep up with tech for support purposes if nothing else. If I HAD to use it if purchased, then I kind of doubt it. I don't like it as much as Vista(my preference) or Win7.

Just spent a couple of hours with the Preview, and I like it. I don't love it, and I don't see any compelling reason to move from Win7, but I'm willing to give it a shot. I still have yet to see what all the bellyaching is about; in less than 30 min., I was able to get my favorite browser up and configured (Not IE), my email current, and was pleased to see the Metro interface let me get to the desktop in one simple click. I was particularly surprised to see how quick it was on a 7200 rpm SATA II drive I swapped in; everything felt snappy. It'll take some getting used to, but I see no issue with that. My biggest complaint is that Windows Live Mail (which I use a lot) is no longer supported; looks like either Outlook or webmail.

Give thunderbird a go if you want a good client.

I'll get it for free through my employer. Do I plan to use it? Probably not, and if it's true that Media Center is dropping TV tuner support in Win8, definitely not.

I used XP for almost 8 years, only been using Win7 for 2. I think it's still got some life left in it.

Got a spare drive? At least try it before writing it off. And by "try it" I mean use it for more than 10 min. after you gag at the Metro look.

Nope. I only recently switched to 7 in the past month or so since I built a core i7 machine. I felt I needed more speed, so I switched to Linux. Windows 7 will be for gaming only, or other stuff I can't do in Linux. It's not so much a hate thing, I just have no use for yet another OS upgrade.

Let me boot into desktop and never leave it, then I will buy Windows again.

It really is so simple as that. Maybe its beyond them.

I'd possibly buy it once the hacks or revision that removes Metro/lets you turn it off and never see it again comes out. Otherwise, it offers nothing compelling over Windows 7. A waste of $40 is still a waste of $40. Even the fact MS is pricing it that low reveals they know it's not worth anything more than that to virtually anyone.

The only thing keeping me from switching to Linux is PC gaming on Windows... so until Microsoft can manage to get the DPC Latency of Win8 down from ~1000μs to the ~50μs of Win7, I won't be switching to it because games play like crap currently.

I'll buy the upgrade because it's cheap. However I'm still unsure whether it'll become my main OS until I give it a fair crack.

I have played several older games without issue on my secondary machine that was running the Consumer Preview (now the Release Preview). My latency stays pegged at the 1000 mark. What games are giving you trouble?

I am buying the upgrade for my secondary desktop for the same reason: it's cheaper than any other Windows license. My main gaming machine is going to stay on 7.

All games and video streams have dropped frames, which appears as micro-stutter. FPS measurement will fail to show this trend because it's not precise enough of a measurement, but nothing is as fluid as it should be because of the dropped frames. It will appear as if the motion has a constant rubber-banding effect.

As I said, not just games, but video files or online video streams as well.

too many clicks to get things done, but its not just the clicks, its the hovering which makes it even slower. to power down
you have to hover over the right hand side, wait for charms to spring out, then move straight down, if you happen to swerve off, then you have to repeat. select settings, then select to power the stupid thing down. uggh, just one example
naturally you can use kb shortcuts, but i was never one for typing.

I have not noticed this at all on my system. Games and videos appear normal.

The question was directed at everyone as individuals. Until it works well for me, I won't be buying it for me.

It doesn't matter to me whether you buy it or not. I was simply curious which games you have been having problems with, as I am not seeing any micro-stuttering at all in any games or videos that I have tried. And my DPC latency stays pegged at 1000. Seems like a non-issue to me, but I'll admit that I have only tried W8 on one particular PC, so maybe I'm just getting lucky with my configuration?
