EDIT:
Damn 'gonna have to postpone because my card is defective.
Temperature shoots to 106*C after 5 minutes of playing anything...
It then suffers from heavy stuttering. Ironic since I bought this card over waiting for the 4870X2 to avoid this very issue. Obviously, just a bad card but funny nonetheless.
Wish me luck on my replacement

I'll be able to play with my GTX280 this coming weekend and was wondering if someone wanted to join me in running some benches -- preferably some that are not so common (like 8xSQ AA or equiv, etc)

These are some of the games that I have:
Crysis
World in Conflict
Mass Effect
Bioshock
Company of Heroes, O.F.
HL2, Team Fortress, DoD:Source, etc
Oblivion
FEAR
Battlefield 2, 2142
Call of Duty 2
Doom 3, R.E.
Quake IV
Civilization IV

Let me know if you want to try something out like a time demo or a straight path in the ICE stage in Crysis, for example.
Open to ideas.

Cant wait for these benches.

Maybe you can do one indepth review on every aspect (performance, heat, power consumption, noise etc) of the card e.g like what lopri did. You can point out the bad, the good etc.

i'd like to see 8xMSAA numbers with transparency SSAA enabled at 1920x1080 and 1280x720 ... i wanna see if there's a reason for people with HD projectors or large HDTVs to grab the 280 (or the 4870 with is awesome 8xMSAA ability) in order to help manage the giant pixel size issue of large screens.

honestly 8xMSAA isn't necessary with adequate DPI monitors, but large TVs (with large pixels) could benefit from it (especially if you like to sit too close when playing games).

I'll be running 8xAA benchmarks after I upgrade but I'm still waiting for the 1 GB 4870.

Derek, is there any info you can share with us about the ETR of the 1 GB 4870? I?ve heard everything from ?mid-July? to ?the end of July?, but nothing concrete.

In addition to regular AA benches, I'd like to see transparency AA modes tested in heavy alpha texture scenarios, like Oblivion vegetation, because few sites if any test these features.

I'd love that. I'll help with whatever I can. I really didn't think I'd buy an AMD this time around because it's my NV system that really needs an upgrade for its meaning of existence. I am still willing to, if it's worth paying for (i.e. handles high res / AA noticeably better). Otherwise I might just wait for 55nm shrink. You've got a same board as mine, it'd be interesting. (Although I don't have such a large selection of games)

P.S. How did you install F.E.A.R. on Vista64? Well, actually I was able to install it once with the original disc, but after I lost it I got a 'Golden Edition' that comes with the expansion. That disc I could never install on Vista64.

Add in some hybrid AA modes if you can, e.g 8xS and 16xS.

Screenshots would be nice too. Hopefully i aint asking for too much.

A DX9 Vs. DX10 comparison would be great, comparing how both cards handle both DX9 and DX10, whether one card proves better at DX10 or not.

If you have it, I would nominate Hellgate: London as a comparison game. DX9 looks great but even just a month after release, DX10 was just absolutely jawdropping with the graphics in areas. I preferred its graphical looks to Crysis.

err :! gamespot has some dx9 vs dx10 comparison article :! i really never can tell the difference in most of games. In Crysis DX10 vs Crysis DX9, you really could see the difference but the some dude found a way to enable the DX10 feature on DX9.

I can use DX10 but i never do because the performance vs Graphic gain ain't worth it.

As for hellgate London , i have a copy and i will take some DX9 screenshot and then i will need to install windows vista to do DX10 screenshot.

The difference between DX9 and DX10 was night and day in Nov 07 on my 8800GT. The textures in DX10 were just out of this world however the DX10 bugs let it down, playable nevertheless.

DX9 performed much better.

Also, Gamespot is a large company who I seldom use. I tend to dislike their reviews and feel that the whole operation is subpar.

I believe it was designed to second as a mini-furnace as well.
nVidia has me covered for our cold Alberta winters.
Summers on the other hand...

I've just visited NV News briefly, and I had no idea of the extent of the issue. It looks like some cards are being fed with excessive voltages.

Well, I do have to say that the card performed amazingly for the 5 minutes at a time when it wasn't overheating.
Crysis runs so smoothly it made my jaw drop.
I don't understand why people complain about having to do SLI GTX280 to get the game to work well...
AA is a no-go of course, though

Didn't Nvidia's stock drop heavily because so many of their new chipsets were having horrible yields (25% failure rate?). Maybe some of their problematic chips got in to the manufacturing chain?

No, their stock prices started dropping on news they would miss their quarterly guidance figures. The GPU problems were related to G84/G86 mobile chipsets and while incurring a 200M liability for repairs may have contributed somewhat, its more likely lowering revenue estimates by 20% or so was the real catalyst.

Well Very High is still out of reach but ya I was very pleased with how well Crysis played on High. I was only able to do mostly Medium with High Textures on my G80 GTX and still got lower FPS than the GTX 280 on High.

Sucks about the overheating problem, seems like there's some bad cards out there but at least it manifests itself quickly so you're good on a replacement. A few other titles that see a huge difference in playability are CoH DX10 and NWN2 if you have those laying around.
