Started out at $50k. Promoted a year later, and making $71k three years in. I'm happy.

Outside of work I have a great wife who is an accountant, a nice house on 4 acres in the woods, and a baby on the way.

I started to feel successful in life when I finally bought a house at 24 but then the housing market tanked.

Since then, I've spent huge chunks of money on the house, knowing that it won't sell for squat until I fix it up. I probably won't feel 100% until I rid myself of this ball & chain... At least my career is looking good...

I'd say I feel that now is the case more than any other point in my life. I just got promoted and a 15% raise, have a wife I love and a nice house. I'm working at paying off my debts from a few years ago and should be done doing so in the next year or so.

Just like the rest of ATOT.

does everyone even reach that feeling, just because? it's not a prerequisite to existence. a man that you would think the most successful person you ever met might feel like a failure to himself.

Well lets see, I paid my way through college taking zero loans (not one sent from my parents for tuition) and on top of that I helped put my Brother through med school. That is when I felt really proud of what I accomplished. In fact, the times I have felt most successful/proud of what I have accomplished is when I was able to help my family out financially since they went through some pretty hard times raising me. The most important thing for me is my family.. all my material possessions are secondary.

I'm 24, some days I feel successful, other days not. I made it thru a top-rated MSEE program (Georgia Tech), but sometimes I feel like I bluffed it a lot (ok, I know I did). Got an awesome job that I didn't have to interview for (based on working hard one summer three years ago) but screwed up all the other interviews so didn't get any other worthwhile offer. Had a great girl but broke up with her years ago and been trying off and on to get her back (and dated quite a few in between). Great family that is very generous with me, but also very demanding..So yes, and no..

I start a job that will use my masters instead of my undergrad here in a few weeks with a huge raise. So as far as that goes I think I can consider myself successful in my career at that point.

In life I wont feel successful until...... I don't know yet.

Edit: I'm 25

Go read L&R (or listen to any talk radio show) and you'll feel like superman in 10 minutes.

Briefly, this year (I'm 28) when my wife and I bought our house....but then that all subsided when I started feeling like I should be making more money to better cope with the mortgage and projects that need to be done. *sigh*

I started feeling generally happy on a regular basis when I found my current job which was when I was 25. I was happy before too, but not nearly as much as I am now. As far as everything else goes, I have what I want to be satisfied. I have a beautiful woman in my life who I couldn't ask more from. A great stepson. Awesome friends that I can trust with my life. A good family even though they are farther away than what I would prefer. No house yet, but that will come in time. I make a comfortable living, but I'm not rich and nor do I really care which plays a big part in my satisfaction. Life is good.

So once you've "succeeded", then what? Now what is left to drive you? What is there to strive for? It's like continuing to drive around the track after you've won the race: what's the point? Either there is no real success, or you're simply existing. That's a scary thing, to succeed by age 22-24, and then simply live for the next 50 or 60 years. That's a long time to not be striving for anything.
