At what age did you start to feel successful in life?

I suppose I'll feel good after grad school.

Nah, I think it's more like when I move out of my parents home and can live well of of the money I make. Sure I could move out now, but how much can I save? Not that much considering I'm maxing out my 401k and Roth.

Who cares? No matter what metric you use to measure your own success, someone else out there has accomplished more, unless you happen to be Bill Gates or Warren Buffet. Even in their case, their claim to fame happens to be business and investing. They could just look at a pro/olympic athlete and say they are worthless in that respect.

I know that like 99.99% of the rest of the population, I will never be a pro athlete, actor, billionaire, hold a high political position, discover some breakthrough technology, etc. Very few people will ever be able to claim that they accomplished something truly rare or unique in their lives.

My answer to your question is therefore "never".

I was 30 when I paid off the mortgage on my house, so that was the day that I realized I had achieved a major financial goal.

When I was about 46 I realized there is a lot more to life than money, and I really started to appreciate my family and friends more. I think this was a more fundamentally important achievement than the paid off mortgage.

Both a blessing and a curse.


I've done a lot with very little. I feel pretty successful now. I'm not making thousands of dollars, own a fancy car, or am I married.

Though one day I would like a family of my own, I guess I have to get over this shy thing.
