I don't know, never? I have not called in sick before, though I have gone home early. :hmm:

It's easy to tell when people work soft, cushy jobs. Fools think they can just come on in to work when they are sick. In my line of work, being sick means putting the rest of the team at risk. Being sick means you are weak. Being sick means you won't be at your best. When people in my line of work get sick, they stay home. They stay home. Everyone knows this.

don't kid yourself. you don't have a job. and going outside and mowing your parents' lawn doesn't count as a job

I dont get sick days. I get PTO days to be used however I want. If I don't use them, I lose them. So I make sure I use them. I rarely get sick enough to actually use a PTO day though. Can't remember the last time I used a PTO day to stay home and nurse a cold or something.

To me it's when I can't function properly. Quite honestly so many people get sick throughout the winter, and you can't always say it's because of so-and-so. The fact is there's always someone in the office sneezing or coughing at least... And to say that 1 sick person equates to epidemic in the office, that's going too far. Are we all this weak?

Sometimes it's a minor cold I wake up with and I feel better the next day already. If I'm to take off for even a minor symptom because I'm afraid of getting the office sick, I'd be out of sick leave/PTO already.

The fact is most colds you can take some OTC medicine and you'll be fine. My worst cold last winter was dealt with using Mucinex. Sure I coughed up some nasty crap and blew my nose full of crap sometimes, but I was decent enough to work and Iw asn't coughing every 30 seconds. If it's a flu or something I'd take a day or two off at most, but you can't expect to stay out until you completely recover. Just make sure the worst is past. Some medication and you should be fine in the office.

Stomach pains are a different issue. I walked straight out 2 weeks ago when I was just in a whole load of pain and compounded by the fact I spent the whole weekend doing photography and slept in some weird position the night before, my back was in pain. I couldn't even sit up in my desk, so sometime in the afternoon I took off early and collapsed on my bed for 5 hours (barely made it home with all the stomach pain).

I dunno, but when I worked my last job, I think I was one of 2 people who didn't get the flu that swept through the building. It was pretty bad.

For the most part, though, no, a few people might come down with it, but not nearly everyone. I still don't want to work around someone who is sick though.

my problem is I never know if it's allergies or if I'm coming down with something.

90% of the time it's allergies.

today? not so sure!

for me, allergies/sinus is an everyday issue, so it only keeps me away from work if I get a sinus infection.

other than that, anything really contagious, or life-threatening, I suppose.

Rule of thumb....

If I am boss....you are never too sick to work

If you are boss...I am always too sick to work

Never really, which is wrong. I think I helped spread the love around my last job. A few other people came in sick, I did too since I was paid by the hour as a temp. One guy got pneumonia, others just sounded.

I've only taken 1 sick day in the past year, and that was on my third day on the job (I wasn't really "sick").

I was sick at home for 4 days thinking I had the flu, went to the doctor and they sent me straight to the hospital. Two cat scans and multiple chest x-rays later, they said I had alcoholic hepatitis of the liver, enlarged gall bladder, and pneumonia.

I got the pneumonia from aspirating on vomit while I was sick at home.

I was also having icepick headaches in my left ear, so they did a arterial biopsy which ended up putting me in a chemical induced come for 14 hours, because my 02 level would not come back up to a normal level.

Liver will heal itself since I will quit drinking completely. Have to stop smoking too so I may be a bit grouchy at times.

First time I have called in sick in ~20 years

You are disappoint... You're missing out, man
Then again, it probably makes a difference for people who like their job and like working. I like working, but I've only once had a job I liked so that I never called in sick really.

I've had jobs I hate so much I really couldn't care less (stop gap terrible jobs) where I'd call in sick on Fridays on nice sunny days.... Pretty obvious, but whatever. I don't use junk jobs for references anyways, I only had that particular job a few months.

It's not that I love my job, I just feel bad. I hate saddling others with my work and if I call in sick I know that's going to happen.

Some sort of stupid loyalty thing I guess, or who knows what, I just can't help myself.

Edit: also, now that I'm the boss of my area I like to show up as much as I can to set a good example. I think it works, though some people don't give a crap and never will.

I work in research so I'm always behind

When I had the flu (twice last year) I went in and worked with a mask on. I try to limit what I do to the absolute essentials, but even then I usually end up being at work for at least half the day.
