Theres a saying in medicine, "Youre either rounding on your patients, or someones rounding on you."

So basically never.

I think it also depends on your job. If you're sniffling and sneezing every 15 seconds and work in a restaurant, you have no business being there.

But sniffling and sneezing at a place where you work in a cubicle? You're fine, go to work.

A) When I'm contagious

or

B) When I'm not fully in control of my bodily functions. If I have to remain within 20 feet of a toilet, I'm not going in to work.

I only took 1 day off in 6mo at my last job. I couldn't sleep at all, because junk wouldn't stop wanting to ooze out of my face every time I tried to sleep. I couldn't find the meds to take to thwart it off enough. By the time everyone woke up in the morning I found out my sister had them in her room because she was sick the week before. -_- I was at work the rest of the week after that.

Normally it's uncontrollable bowel movements. Although I usually keep constipatories and spare clothes with me most of the time, just in case.

or when i know i will be a danger to the people on my crew, either by making them sick or not paying attention when we are picking up or laying down tools.

If I am puking or so sick from a cold that I am kind of sore. Or if I have to blow my nose every minute... it's just not worth it then. Can't get any work done...

This.

If I'm not puking or shitting, I'm at work. Did you know regular over the counter ephedrine inhibits your immune system, basically masking all symptoms of illness? People at work don't even know I'm making them all sick. I'm touching the door handles, I'm answering phones, I'm signing things.

It has happened several times where I'll be sick, I take a bunch of ephedrine to mask it, then next week half of my department is home sick. It's a dick move, but welcome to the world of capitalism. I don't get paid if I'm not there, so I'm going to show up whether you want me to or not.

This. I hate it when people bring their bugs into work and give it to everybody. Don't come in like that!
Give me paid sick days and I'll stay home. I have bills to pay and I need this money as much as you do. If I'm going to lose hundreds of dollars for skipping work, then fuck that. I won't skip work.

Clearly your employer needs to reconsider their PTO policy. Nobody wins when everyone is sick.

I completely agree. I really wish I could just stay home on sick days, but it won't happen because paid sick days are seen as something that enable people to skip work just because. They're absolutely right; that does happen, but what is the alternative?

paid sick days = your worst employees skip work because they can
unpaid sick days = your best employees skip work because they were infected by the sick guy who refuses to stay home

I've only called off work sick once or twice in the 9 years with this company. I normally work when I'm sick.

Now I work out of home for the same company. Makes it difficult to call off. "Uh yeah, sorry boss, I'm gonna have to stay home today."

"No duh Tweak."

It's easy to tell when people work soft, cushy jobs. Fools think they can just come on in to work when they are sick. In my line of work, being sick means putting the rest of the team at risk. Being sick means you are weak. Being sick means you won't be at your best. When people in my line of work get sick, they stay home. They stay home. Everyone knows this.

Pretty easily for me.. I'm rarely sick, so now and then, when I feel like garbage, I just stay home. I hate my job anyways, so sometimes its nice having a random day off.

I was like that last week. Vomited twice while at work...couldn't sit up straight...could barely speak or keep my head up. It was bad, very bad.

I still ended up working until about 3:30pm, but went home early and puked some more. I've only been that sick one other time in my life where I actually thought I could die. It really sucked.

Back at work the next day though.

I would pretty much have to be dying... especially with how my sick days work! At my last company, I got infinite sick days (yes, you read that right ) but I almost never used them. I think it's a scheme of reverse psychology where if you don't see that you have a limited number of sick days that you can only use during the year, you might be less tempted to use them all up.

I only ever took one sick day at my last job and that was partially because I was already laid off at that point so I wasn't really doing work anyway.

At my current job, we have combined vacation and sick time, and I seem to get no more vacation time than I did at my previous job, so now I don't feel like wasting my PTO on being ill.

When I'm sick or feel the need to take a day off, I hate my job so there isn't much motivation to go to work when I don't feel well.

There are a lot of good answers here. Hard to argue with any of them.

For me, though, the best one kind of rolls them all into one and can be paraphrased as follows:

If you are too sick to enjoy your day home from work, then you are too sick to go into work.

The fun part is though, I'm pretty sure you're also contagious before you even start to show symptoms. (Obviously this depends on the pathogen which is causing the problem.)

For colds and things like that, I'd have to agree, though people are still contagious for a few days after symptoms appear. I think with stomach viruses, for example, it might be different. Those are primarily spread in the bathroom?
