What is the recommended temperature to maintain to avoid risk of freezing pipes in wall bursting? (I saw 65, but also maybe 55, not sure).

Also read that most energy efficient settings are supposed to be 68 (heat) and 78 (ac) (?)

Depends on where you live. You really shouldn't have unprotected pipes excepting the ones that go outside. I think any temperature that's comfortable for humans should keep enough heat in the house to keep pipes from freezing.

Edit:
The most efficient temperature is the lowest you can deal with in the winter, and the highest you can deal with in the summer.

Got up this morning and it was a 67 in the house.

Kicked the furnace on for the first time this year.

We keep ours set at 70 all winter. Anything less and it feels chilly.

Not till November 1. Kind of a rule that I got spending time with my Swede grandfather. I just keep the windows shut & sealed and bake or broil something if it gets a bit too cold. Cooler weather = more spooning with the wife. Unfortunately, the dog & 2 cats also spoon in the mix.

Where's your kids Pizza? I use a wool point blanket. I like getting into a cold bed, and feeling the warmth slowly build up :^)

One kid is at college. One kid quit college to pursue his original career choice and is living in the back of one of our minivans. He parks at various fast food places & gets coffee or french fries when he wants wifi access. He parks at the job site where he gets free electric via an extension cord. (And has an electric blanket.) Huge thumbsup from me for his choices.

Hasn't happened yet this year. I'm still sleeping with doors and windows open...It gets into the mid-50's at night outside...but only into the 60's in the house. No heat required...yet.

During the winter, furnace is set at 68, during the summer, AC is set at 77.

I turned my furnace on the first weekend of this month. Michigan's weather has been fluctuating a lot this month. At least my heat is set at 67 degrees.

when inside gets below 60 at night. i dont mind mid to low 60s, a sheet and a blanket are usually enough for me, below that it just gets annoying using another blanket, so up goes the heat.

hasnt happened yet, weve had some cool nights and i dont leave the window open in my bedroom

If I had control over my apartment, probably when the temperature dropped into the 50s and it would be getting cold inside. Alas, I do not have control and I started to hear the radiators earlier this week.

At the point when it is cold all day. Right now it is 65 in my house, but it's 70 and sunny outside and supposed to get to 77. So, no point in turning the heat on yet.

Never as well, mainly because its never too cold around here It never drops below 10ºC inside the house, and probably not even 15ºC during the day

LOL, how long do you figure he/she decides this is not what he/she want`s to do for the rest of his/her life?.

How old is he/she and how long has he/she been doing this?

Wow, coal heating. Didn't think too many people outside the coal country hills of KY/WV/VA (few others) used coal stoves anymore. Grew up with coal stoves and fireplace inserts that burned coal.
Seems to be becoming more popular. I know a few people who've switched to coal the last few years.

I turned mine on about a week & a half ago just to make sure it's running OK. Since, i've had it running a couple of nights. When i get home if it feels cold i turn it up this time of year. In the winter it's set at 68-70F when i'm home.

So instead of tossing on a sweatshirt or putting on pants, you just crank it up? I'm guessing you don't pay for the heat in any way.

Shrug I do the same and yes, I pay the electric bill.

But keep in mind that being cold is a relative term that varies from person to person.

We've been trying to see if we can wait till the 1st of the month to turn our heaters on. So far so good, the low temp in the house has been 66.8ºF. The weather has gotten a little better, low 70s for highs. It's supposed to dip down into the low 60s, with lows in the upper 30s though, so we'll see...

I haven't turned it on yet. Usually when temps indoors get down in the low 60s I'll turn it on.

When it gets closer to 60 I'll consider turning it on. Conveniently my apartment is fairly well insulated and small enough that appliances/cooking/me keep it warm enough most of the time. I probably won't have to turn it on until well into December.

I'm not sure the thermostat in my new apartment is even accurate. I don't have the heat on and have the patio door and bedroom window open about 2". Thermostat still says 73 degrees. I still have another blanket and a heating blanket that I can put on my bed. I'm thinking it'll still be a while before I turn the heat on...
