Grew up behind the iron curtain, saw communism fall first hand, vacayed in Croatia right after the war, lived all over the world etc. etc. At this point in my life, I'm glad I don't have exist in places where things like personal safety aren't guaranteed... places that seem to draw adventure tourists.

Am I incorrect to guess you grew up as a white suburban kid somewhere in the US?

I was in Yugoslavia shortly after the war. I saw the burned out tanks and the bullet holes everywhere. I met the crazy mercenaries. I can understand that you might have some issues.

I grew up in Europe and the USA. I can understand if you're scared but personal safety is a relative thing. Statistically driving in your car is more dangerous than many things you could go out doing while travelling. Driving is more dangerous than the Inca Trail for example. What's stopping you from doing that? Besides the horrible toilets en route? I am willing to take more risks than you but there are plenty of things out there that are safe enough yet great experiences. Are you so risk averse now that anything that can kill you is off the table? Sky diving? Bungee jumping? Night clubs? Safari? Scuba Diving? Surfing?

I see. You're just a fucking idiot who can't read.

He is saying the exact same thing that I was. Dentists and accountants pay tens of thousands of dollars to go on an adventure tour so they can go home and brag about it and pretend they "climbed mount everest." It is not mountaineering, it is tourism. This is coming from the first guy to summit it.

So, please kindly go fuck yourself.

You sound a bit thick.

Nowhere does he actually talk about what is required to climb Mount Everest.

I suggest you educate yourself on how punishing it is to climb up Everest, guides or no guides, before relying on self-gratifying soundbites to form your opinion it.

My quick google search shows plenty of information on what an actual Everest summit entails.

You might want to read up on it since you're off the mark. You keep trying to make it sound like Disneyland and it's not.

As a climber, nobody with any kind of experience would ever refer to that first picture as "mountain climbing."

As an armchair mountaineer, I concur.

Hard to figure out what's going on in that picture... mid-pitch on a trad route? I don't see any gear though... or bolts. o_o

Your argument essentially boils down to, "I wouldn't want to do that, therefore anyone who would is an idiot." Very mature of you.

Let me put it in pictures, so you might understand.

This is mountain climbing:

This is adventure tourism:

If you can't tell the difference between the two, you are a fucking idiot. The first picture is of a pursuit that is worthy of respect and admiration. The 2nd ain't.

I am sorry, but you are incorrect. The first is rock climbing, the second high-altitude mountaineering.

Also, calling anything done above 8,000m tourism is possible exclusively if you ignore completely the reality. Everest is not particularly technical if climbed on one of the two normal routes (but there are technical routes in the mountain) but it is still a mountain that maims and kills easily, including (sadly) more than a few world-class climbers.

What's with all the hostility and anger? If anyone here has problems, it's most definitely you. Grow up.

That's not mountain climbing, that's a tourist getting hoisted up the side of a rock by a guide.

lol, not only does that look like a kid in the pic, the domain url for that image is even CampingTourist.com

Owned. Like a bitch

Not sure if you're trolling or just really clueless? Climbing Everest is still not easy. It's very dangerous. You can't just do it with no experience no matter how much you have to spend.

Also in the past it's usually been the wealthy doing this with as much help as the time offered.

If you are so jelly, why don't you man up and make some dough so you can do this too?
