Now this here is a smart individual. :awe:If I stay in the USA, it will be a place with a cooler climate and a place that isn't too crowded. Will be still closeish to family though. Northern Wisconsin or the Upper Peninsula of Michigan would be my top 2 picks.
Double check that. Our county's homestead exemption is only on the 1st $50k. Don't know if other counties are different. Also, from my point of view, lake property taxes are stupid high for SC. Depends on how much industry the county has. Mine has a lot and my property taxes are stupid low, FTW.This is a question we're facing right now. Having ~3 acres w/house and working dog kennel paid for makes Cape Cod enticing, esp. considering the health care system here, but we've been discussing it and are seriously thinking of selling this property and moving back to GA or into SC, around Clark's Hill Lake, nee Strom Thurmond Lake.
And the SC side is very attractive due to SC's no property tax on retirees. All sorts of listings for acreage just off the lake for reasonable prices. Found quite a few 2+ lots for around $12K-$15K.
Everything's damned cheaper down there....electricity, nat. gas, gasoline, food, taxes...everything. Almost cannot wait to sell and leave Cape Cod for a proper lake with proper fishing.

We're thinking about Hawaii too. But it's expensive.

Central America, Australia or Thailand or somewhere here with low taxes and great weather.
In my grave. By the time we're all "of retirement age", there won't be any such thing as retirement anymore. Just look at typical retirees these days. Most of them have to work + social security just to get by anyway.
In the OP's mom...
or at least, in her basement.
Even if you are 18, you should still put some thought into it. No one with any sense is going to ask a teen to set their retirement plans in stone, but just spend some time each week thinking about your future. Dream a little. Maybe write down some ideas in a journal. Realistically specific plans can never happen this far out, but its nice to not be clueless for 50 years and all of a sudden start worrying.
