Chinese Prisoners Allegedly Forced to Play 'World of Warcraft'
By Sarah Jacobsson Purewal, PCWorld May 26, 2011 6:01 AM

Apparently there's a new type of chain gang -- a virtual one. According to The Guardian, Chinese prisoners are forced to play hours upon hours of "World of Warcraft," farming virtual gold that the prison guards can then sell in the real world for nonvirtual cash.

The prisoners, who naturally never saw any of the money, also had quotas to meet. According to Dali, "If I couldn't complete my work quota, they would punish me physically. They would make me stand with my hands raised in the air and after I returned to my dormitory they would beat me with plastic pipes.

I suggested to my Raid Leader that this might be a good “Motivational” tactic for our guild runs. His response was that he was checking on line for tasteful and sturdy plastic pipes.

Has anyone ever had an issue with jumping on Magmaw and falling through him? It usually happens once or twice in a night, but my character will start the jump animation and just end up "inside" him. I have to then scurry to attempt to get on him again before he starts spewing. Had a good attempt last night screwed up because I couldn't get on him quick enough after that and the chains got out of sync.

Killed the bastard anyway and he dropped my pants (yay) and then Chimaeron finally put out and dropped my bracers (double-yay). But ugh... reforging is such a pain in the ass. It takes me about 30-40 minutes to solidify a reforge to ensure my hit and expertise are as close to the cap as I can get them without sacrificing stats. I spend quite awhile on www.chardev.org just trying different methods out. It was interesting, because one time I managed to get my hit and exp close to cap, but my other stats (mostly Mastery and Crit) were abysmal in comparison to my other configuration. Although, I got it so I'm only +3 rating over each cap, so that's good. I ended up having to finally cave in and drop Reverberation to do it though .

No on the Magmaw question, haven’t seen it.

I don’t have the url here but check out the site “Ask Mr Robot WoW” for their gear optimizer. It really helped me make positive adjustments for my gems, enchants and with re forging.

Gratz on the drops, and you can say “I got them before the NERF”

I'll try and get a video of it happening if I can, but it seems very random. We fought Magmaw a few times and it only happened maybe... twice?

I saw Mr. Robot mentioned on MMOC once and I saw it when it first came out, so I decided I'd try it out and see how well it could do. It did a pretty bad job with the reforges. It put me under the hit cap and over the expertise cap :\. I find it works better if I just do it myself.

Heh, they're the heroic pieces anyway and supposedly heroics aren't getting nerfed.

Well on the Mr. Robot thing…. When did you use it last? It was supposedly been updated recently. When I ran it for my Hunter it worked well but who knows who well it works on other classes. It was very helpful as I was over hit cap and it helped me juggle all the other stats to bring my hit down to a more than acceptable miss rate of 0.03 % and increase my crit rate by a few percent.

Probably a month to two months ago. I told the author about the errors, so they might be fixed now. I might try it again to see if it can beat my own work. I doubt it would do what I did and reforge my Fluid Death's hit to expertise. Without any reforges, I actually have about 18.9% spell hit, so I have to reforge it down. The amusing part, is that I actually reforged it to below 17% and then reforged it back up. Weird changes like that usually lets me get it closer to the cap rather than being strict about taking the worst stat (haste) and making it the best stat (expertise).

I'm actually curious if you could have gotten closer than that.

Pretty sad right now. I managed to stay in the same guild for about the past 5 years or so, alternating between periods of heavy raiding and 'taking a break' (aka soloing, doing 5 mans, or just staying away from the game entirely). Anyway, I logged in today for the first time in a few months and realized that the rumors were true, I was the only one online, and the guild roster was pretty much empty.

The guild is gone.

I know I didn't really play anymore so in terms of the game itself I really don't care that much. But ultimately it sucks knowing that the game I knew, the game I played for much of the last 5-6 years, is pretty much done for me, at least in the way that I knew it. Sure I could join another guild, meet new people, do some randoms, etc. but it will never be the same.

Anyone else know where I'm coming from on this?

WoW is as much of a social game as anything... which I think some non-players don't really understand. But anyway... it is always a big investment to try and find another guild as finding one where you easily fit in isn't easy at all. I'm kind of the odd guy out in the guild that I'm in... I came in as a friend and the person that got me in doesn't even play anymore .

They're all cool with me doing stuff though... it helps that I don't have much of a life, so when it comes to being available to raid and such, I'm always around .

Yup I understand where you are coming from even if it hasn’t happened to me. I’m part of a very unusual guild in that we all know each other in real life and have been friends in real life for a long time. To find a good guild where you fit in is rare enough, to find one like mine is even rarer.

Now there are down sides to my guild, we are all older with several of our members retired. The youngest of us is the son of the Raid Leader. Other than the few retired members the rest of us have jobs, kids, commitments ect…. so it ends up being that we can only manage to raid once a week.

Even with the limited raiding time we managed to get to the Litch King before Cata came out and we have made some progress in Cata 10 man content. We are not fast but we support each other and find ways to get the job done… eventually.

I guess my point is that I understand how you feel because the game means so much more to me because of the people I play it with.

Maybe, but it did help me increase my crit percentage, mostly at the expense of Mastery and a little Haste. So far I’ve noticed a fair jump in my DPS but what I truly need to do is drop the Beast Master for Marksman, at least for 10 man content. The Rogue and I have always been neck and neck on DPS but now he is pulling ahead in some fights. The Warlock is also dropping some high numbers now as well and dropping me to third. I need to step up my game before the Mage, Shaman and Shadow Priest catch up as well.

I logged on to do my normal AH crap and saw the new mount I was like oh cool wonder where that is from, so I just check wowhead real quick and see it is celestial pony 2.0 and laugh.

Switch back to the game and turn around and there was 5 more and I just lol pretty good.

We downed Heroic Halfus on Monday then 2 shot him on Tuesday, easy fight.

I like that it is small like the griffon. I also like that it has a glide animation, which the griffon mount never seemed to do, even though the taxi griffon did. The fire head/wing trails are a little much after awhile. I definitely like it more than the transparent pegasus.

Halfus is probably my least favorite fight, because of the AoE necessity in the beginning. Shaman AoE is... well, pretty awful in that it has the longest ramp-up time for any AoE (most have none or very little) and actually requires you to somewhat pay attention unlike the place-the-circle-under-the-baddies style of AoE .

Essentially, we drop Magma Totem (or Fire Elemental works too), and have to keep switching between targets without Flame Shock, keep as many Flame Shocks applied as we can, use Fire Nova off cooldown, weave in Chain Lightnings and when we aren't doing all that, we attempt to use our single target rotation for a little extra DPS :\.

Not to mention, I really dislike how I almost always die on Halfus, because of the damn fireballs that get placed under me during a Furious Roar. The fiery circles usually appear a split-second before he starts roaring or right after, and I can't move until after the fireballs already hit. It's worse when I get more than one fireball and I'm close enough that I'll be damaged by both. What makes matters worse is that he ends up casting Shadow Nova after the roar, and I can't interrupt it (nothing to remove a stun). I was furiously mashing my health stone, but I couldn't get it off in time :\.

For sure. Our guild leader and a few others left for Rift. Another left for EQ2 of all things. I stayed with WoW up until a few weeks ago, but now I'm on Rift and I don't see myself returning to WoW anytime soon. I joined my old guildies and we're all loving it. I'm only level 30, so we'll see what the end game looks like, but I'm enjoying this so much more than WoW it's not even funny. I haven't enjoyed an MMO this much since EQ in early 2000 when I first set foot in Nektulos Forest as a noob Night Elf.

When I left our WoW 10m, we were 5/12 heroic. I just wasn't enjoying the game anymore.

It's become way, way too easy and there's virtually no class identity anymore. PvP ruined WoW PvE. The raid content is actually quite good, but there's nothing else. PvP is a pillar humping, LoS fest. While there is some skill involved, there's also skill in rock paper scissors. The problem is neither are enjoyable.

Also there's no element of danger and dying means nothing. You can run through a pack of mobs and most of the time you'll never die, and even if you do, it takes like 10 seconds to return to life. It's stupid. There is a ton of punishment for death in Rift either, but the one thing I love is the invasions and how you can get totally raped by essentially a mobile pack of raid trash at any given time. Without a group you basically just have to GTFO. There's danger, and you can't just lay waste to everything without even thinking.

I didn't necessarily mean for this to be a Rift post, but in short if you're bored with WoW, check it out. To me it's a hybrid of the best parts of EQ and the best parts of WoW.

I was mildly interested in trying out Rift, but after reading this now I know that I shouldn't waste my time. So thanks

Yanno, i was on my warrior earlier, and while i was sending in my undead lion pet, laying down death and decay, doing rain of fire while hellfiring and shooting arcane missiles, after i bubbled and put a renew and thorns on me, i was thinking, is this really what warriors do?
