Those points make complete sense and I agree with you. I am now (unfortunately) guildless, after quitting for several months, and think the whole experience suffer a lot from this. But on the other hand i'm a real casual player where I can log for a couple of hours every other day so LFG is ok with me.

But I do agree that WoW lost it's way since WotLK and the community is no longer relevant.

Until my next unsubbing though i'll continue to enjoy the game in my solo casual way

you can join a guild and just be a social member who does things with people randomly. no obligations or expectations

I mean if your on my server ill just invite you so you are not guildless

Yeah i'm on a guild and i do endeavour into lfr and random bgs, as well as the occasional pug through the group finder.

The guild is mostly friends from back in vanilla that come back every now and then with each expansion, they do mostly pvp and i just dabble into guild chat

I think Garrisons have really changed the concept of dailies, but I also think that Garrisons have really tainted WoW as a MMO. Note that I specifically said "as a MMO", because what happens now? Everyone just sits in their garrison instead of a major city. You're sitting in your own little instance, which seems to undermine the idea of being in this social game. But hell... who am I kidding? WoW hasn't been a social game since TBC/Wrath. They've made it even worse by allowing people to get credit for things without grouping up. I mean... it's nice not to have to worry about it, but it really hurts the idea that you should work together.
I completely agree and disagree at the same time... I totally understand what you're saying about people "in an instance" and not being social, but really it's a much larger problem.

I haven't had to interact with people on my server outside my guild since Wrath. Segmenting the population has been going on for a long time now.

Anyone else still have crashing problems? On my one comp (8gb ram, windowed mode), been getting a good number of occurrences lately. On my other (16gb, fullscreen) can't really recall it although I only play on that machine on weekends.

For what it's worth I haven't noticed any crashing on my part since I started playing again. Playing Windowed as well.

I dunno, the difference between sitting in your Garrison and sitting in a city is largely superficial. I mean, prior to WoD, it's not like I interacted with anybody while in the major cities running between the bank and the AH. Sure, you would "see" other players in cities, but it's not like in TBC/WotLK, you would run into randoms in cities and talk with them or group up with them.

If anything, Dungeon Finder, LFG and LFR "ruined" the social aspect of WoW far more than Garrisons did. Prior to Dungeon Finder, LFG and LFR, if you wanted to effectively tackle dungeons and raids, you had to be a member of a guild and build long term relationships with other players. You had to have long term relationships with other players to experience a huge chunk of the content WoW had to offer.

Nowadays, you can experience 99%+ of what WoW has to offer via Dungeon Finder/LFG/LFR and never build a long term relationship with another player. Dungeons and Raids used to be a social activity, but in Dungeon Finder/LFG/LFR it's mainly silent zerging, with the occasional "hello" or anonymous jackassery between players.

Pros and cons. Yes, LFG/LFR are largely anonymous and devoid of personal interaction now. But I can't imagine going back to sitting in a capital and spamming chat for hours, then ride out to the instance, only for the tank to disconnect. Everyone can now choose their level of interaction with others. Join a social guild to chat with people and use the calendar to schedule dungeon runs. Seems like a good solution to me.

Keep in mind that I mentioned that it has been happening since TBC/Wrath.

Although, what really made me think about that was the other day when I did my normal, daily garrison routine, which takes 1-2 hours (I have a lot of alts), and I realized that I hadn't seen another player all day. It made sense why I hadn't, but apart from the fact that I can see people in chat, can you really say that I'm playing a MMO? I could load up IRC and Skyrim to get the same effect.

Agree, which is why I put "ruined" in quotes in my post.

WoW in it's current form is more appealing to me. Years ago, when I had buckets of time and zero real life social skills, the forced social interaction in WoW that was a prerequisite to progression was more appealing. Nowadays, I have zero desire to make "WoW friends," so it's nice that I can experience the content without having to cultivate a "little black book" of WoW contacts to dungeon and raid with.

I think what truly makes it different is the mindset of the players that really shifted from Vanilla to Burning Crusade. The biggest difference that I remember is that people weren't always so focused on "THE END GAME". If you didn't have any friends on to do a dungeon, you could always find something fun to do... even if it had no actual bearing on the game. Southshore vs. Tarren Mill? Those battles started prior to there ever being an honor system in the game, which means there wasn't really much of a point to doing it other than having fun. Albeit, the winner did sort of "control" Hillsbrad for a while, but what Alliance ever quested in Hillsbrad?

I'm not even trying to suggest that I've been immune to this change. I have screenshots of me just doing fun stuff throughout Azeroth, and now.. I never do stuff like that. My mind is always tuned to my next goal of leveling characters or getting gear. I turned something fun into something that's more of a job, and I've been debating whether or not it's pretty much killed gaming for me. When I quit WoW two years ago, I had a hell of a time getting into just about any game that I tried. As weird as it sounds, they just weren't addicting enough. ...and that doesn't mean that they didn't have anything fun about them.

Yeah i used to do silly stuff back in vanilla too, with friends, I used to love seeing new areas, back then the game felt huge and unknown, I really miss that feeling, I havent felt that with any other game since

Yeah. WoW being my first MMO gave me that feeling. I had no idea what I was doing or what an MMO really was. Can't really replicate that anymore since I know what to expect in any MMO now.

And plus most mmo's just ripped off WoW anyway so the majority of them are the same. Even ToR, the biggest budget game in history is basically just WoW with lightsabers.

Mal'Ganis, Horde

Ok, I might start fresh there. I only have a few characters:

92 Undead Destro Lock (leveled from scratch) on Twisting Nether
90 Orc Fury Warrior (with the free 90 from the xpac) on Twisting Nether
49 Dwarf Ret Paladin on Fenris
5 Draenei Paladin on Emerald Dream...lol

I might transfer my 90 Orc War on Mal'Ganis or just start a new toon there...i'll let you know.

What's your Blizz ID?

One good thing, ever since expansion start, even my somewhat non-casual guild that was showing 2-3 people online in the last couple months of MoP routinely has well over a dozen now whenever I check it so at least you've always got talk going on.

I wont be back on till this evening, also I recommend not transferring something and saving the money, just roll a new toon. to see if you like it over here. Malganis is I think the 4th largest Horde based server in WoW. there is literally no alliance on it. always tons of random crap going on. We are an oldschool group who has been playing together since TBC, pretty easy to get along with group. we do our raid thing and our casual crap. none of which you have to or are expected to do

Cool thanks, sounds good and a fresh start on the Horde side will be cool. Dunno if i'll log this week though, i'm off for a snowboard weekend and have my evenings filled with random crap to do. I'll add you in the meantime and look you up online.

Thanks!

I don't think I've been an active member of a guild since the end of Wrath. Starting with Cata I used them for perks only and near the end of Mists I just formed my own and tossed all my characters in it. The removal of guild levels was icing on the cake.

Its not that I mind being grouped with others but the ginvite/achievement/grats spam in most guilds gets annoying really quickly.

Bonesaw reached level [10]!

Ruffus has joined the Guild!
"Way to go!"
"Good Job!"
SnugglePuff has joined the Guild!
Wankstar has left the Guild

I get it but being guildless is pretty depressing in a now solo friendly M(M)ORPG...

Yeah I'd rather same those random congrats than silence all the time. My last real guild was Wrath. Met some people through a pug/vent. They were cool so ended up joining them and playing with them. Then slowly everyone quit and moved on..

LMFAO! I understand that completely. I'm all for interesting conversation, but pointless small talk and constant back patting annoys me. Guild chat is about on par with Facebook for level of conversation.
