Many long-time players have a lot of gold. Millions of gold. 20k Gold is worth a lot less than $15.

You think gold-seller prices are relevant, but they are not. Most players will not consider buying gold from a gold-seller. Because it's illegal, it's a risk, and because many players don't like gold-sellers. So the market for buying gold from gold-sellers was very limited. If not a lot of players want to buy gold, the supply of gold is relatively high, and the price of gold will stay low. But with the new system, there will be a lot more sellers of gold (for a token). Thus the value of gold will drop, and the value of a token will go up. Also, many people (with millions of gold in the bank), don't bother gathering more gold. Once the token system is there, they might start actively acquiring more gold again. And with more gold in the system, the value of gold will go down.

I expect prices for a 30-day game-token to be somewhere between 50k and 100k gold. If you have a million gold, that'll last you a year, to 18 months maybe.

What's interesting is what this system will do with the prices of current items in the game. Will people still buy a ilvl680 BoE item for 50k gold ? Or will they prefer to spend it on a game-token ? Maybe prices of BoE and other valuable in-game items will drop a lot.

I'd like to see this game time token thing taken a little further. Why not allow players to sell gold in game. They could link accounts to a WoW store account, a player could send real money in game to someone and buy gold at whatever price they're they offer it at.

The big question is how expensive the tokens will be in real money. If they're priced higher than $15, it won't make sense.

The price isn't set yet, but it won't be less than the regular subscription price.

I disagree. The idea is to deter gold-buying because of lot of that gold comes from stolen accounts.

I'm going to make an assumption that the new tokens will cost $20, because Blizzard is going to want to make money off this system.

With this new AH, Blizzard will effectively come out and determine a exchange rate. From a WoW economy standpoint, they should not want to stir it up that much. 20k costs about $17 on most sites. If they set the tokens at 50k, then they would cut the value of gold in half, and the AH would see the results. In more likelihood, BOEs, mounts, pets would probably go UP in gold prices because there would be more gold in the hands of people who want to spend it (most of the gold on the realms belong to people who know how to work the economy, so they just save it).

That's my concern as well. I'd expect to see AH prices go up, not down once this hits.

I expect we'll see more people buying time with gold than gold with cash, so a net loss of gold in the economy.

MMO economics are pretty interesting.

I'm a level 100. I'm not making money but then I'm just trying to finish up quests right now and get stuff done. I think I have 35k on me. I don't see how people have millions of gold just lying around unless their goal is just to make money....

I played the market when the expan hit and I was a little bit late too. I went from about 20k to 450k.

My recent investment into blood failed though. Because of the staggered traders per day, there was a huge influx of upgrade items. I'm only breaking even

I think I started this xpac at 200k, im at 450 now and im really lazy about making money. ive prob spent like 150k on things as well (BOE trinkets, bloods early on and so on)

I just list things as I get them and they sell
couple BOEs from salvage
lots of darkmoon cards/trinkets
tons od enchanting dust which sells for like 1000g a stack
savage bloods from the barn, still sell for 4-500 each

It's not a net loss. It's really a net gain.

Let's say I have 2 million gold on me. I'm not using it, and I don't plan on using it.

You decide that you want 250k gold to gear an alt, so you buy enough tokens. I decide I want to buy 10 months worth of tokens. While we cannot make this exchange directly, it will happen in a roundabout way.

This puts 250k gold directly into the market, because you bought it from me to spend it. I was just going to hoard it.

Now, the gold you intend to use to buy BOEs may go to someone who also intends on buying tokens. It creates a new cycle where people are constantly buying and selling gold. And that is why I expect Blizzard to sell the tokens for $20 (or more). They see an opportunity to make a lot of money.

That's funny, I thought about the hoarded money at lunch. You're right, it's not "really" in the system because it's not being moved.

The gold-rich will simply deplete their supply flushing it out of the system not affecting the market much. Others will buy guy and immediately start sloshing that gold around the active market.

There's another aspect to it, people farming gold simple to pay for subscription. I don't mean farming items to sell (obviously people will be doing that), I mean farming old instances/raids for actual gold. This will increase the gold supply as well.

is there any easy way to compare gear?

as a frost mage stat priority is
Intellect > Multistrike > Crit > Versatility > Haste > Mastery

I have this gear on ilvl 655
+158 int
+237 stam
+118 crit strike
+85 multistrike

and just got ilvl 671
+184 int
+275 stam
+116 versatility
+126 mastery

So not the secondary stats I need but better intellect and higher numbers on secondary stats.

yes, run simcraft and compare or use Mr Robot or Pawn with the correct stat weights and it will tell you if its better or not

The gain of 26 intellect and additional secondary stat points (116+126 vs 118+85) is going to more than offset the lower priority of versatility/mastery instead of crit/multi. Go with the 671.

If you run your character through simulationcraft, it will give you stat weights ..... an example would be int = 1.0, multi = .59, crit = .58, haste = .575, etc. There's an addon called Pawn where you can enter those values and it will display the total "value" of each piece and what % of upgrade it is in the tooltip. It also displays a big green arrow when you loot a piece that's an upgrade. You'll just want to rerun simulationcraft every so often because the stat weights may change with gear level -- then enter the new stat values into Pawn so it's up to date.

Depending on how much you actually care, if you run Simcraft, you'll want to make sure the "rotation" in your simcraft profile matches how you play your character. Playing your character differently than the way simcraft runs the simulations will likely result in different real stat weights than the ones it will calculate for you.

So I got the stone to make a pet 25. Have 2 23s, several around 12, and a hundred or so at 1. What would be a good pet to hit 25, probably something that would make it easy to powerlevel the rest.

For power-leveling pets, there are 2 features that are important, imho.

1) You want pets with self-healing, and possibly a shield. This makes power-leveling so much more easy. Your 1 or 2 level-25 pets will require very little, or no healing at all. And thus you never need to go see a pet-healer. Or depend on items like pet-bandages.

2) If you are going to tame pets in the outside-world, the most pets that you will encounter will be beasts and critters. Therefor you want to make sure you have 2 pets that can counter those. With self-healing and a shield. Mechanicals are great against beasts, and beasts are great against critters.

My favorite pet during leveling was the Son of Animus. I got 2 of them from ToT LFR. I sold one for 10k when I needed gold on another server. Sold in a day. So I figured the Son of Animus must be a good pet. And indeed. It has a heal, a shield, and does decent damage. It's mechanical, so great against beasts. If you don't own one, it might be expensive to buy. There might be other great mechanicals, but I can't remember. Most of them are good in combos, or against specific high-end tamers. But the Son of Animus is great by itself.

Another great type of pets are the crabs. I used a Spirebound Crab. I believe other types of crabs have similar abilities. Make sure you get a P/P breed pet. They do more damage, and heal for more. (Read about the breeds of pets. E.g. on warcraftpets.com. And get a small addon that shows the breed). Crabs are amazing during leveling because of their damage, shield and huge self-heal. Aquatics are good against elementals, so it doesn't use its max potential a lot. But even then, it's still great against most other pets.

The third amazing pet is the Emerald Proto-Drake. Again, get a P/P one. It has 2 heals, and a damage ability. It's almost undefeatable. Dragons are great against humans. There are not a lot of humans out there to tame. Still one of the most useful pets.

Last, get a snail. Like a Rapana Whelk. Slow, but great defenses. Can't be CCed, has an evade, has a damage+selfhealing ability. Offensively it's good against undead, so that's useless. But defensively it's good against elementals. So that doesn't help during leveling either. But it's awesome in many of the harder fights (against trainers and pandarian spirits).

So you still need a beast for power-leveling. Because it's good against critters. I've used different beasts myself. Never had one that stood out clearly. I think I often used a scorpion. Or some wolfy-type of pet.

Other pets you should probably own if you are interested in playing pets at max-level: the Anubisath Idol, as Anubis said. Good for certain comboes. Chrominius, for Howl-bombing. Terrible Turnip, to make sure you don't kill pets during taming. Iron Starlette, if you can still get your hands on one. It's awesome for one-shotting mobs (after 2 rounds of pump-up). Gilnean Raven or a Crow, against aquatics. Kun-Lai Runt, similar as Chrominius.

All my knowledge about pets is from MoP. I stopped playing in WoD after 4 weeks. So if things really changed for pets during WoD, others will surely correct me.

PS. Read about breeds here:
http://www.warcraftpets.com/wow-pet-battles/breeds/
And always try to get a breed with P/P, or at least one Power feature.
Don't waste time or resources to level a pet that is not of the optimal breed. Or not blue. You will regret it later. ALthough it is acceptable to use a stone to upgrade a grey/white/green pet of the right breed to a blue one, if that pet is hard to get in itself.

Wow, amazing write up Gryz. I did a bunch of pet battles about a year ago and got a few pets to 25, but haven't done much since. I've been tempted to get back into it just because of the garrison building though.

I started playing MoP in January 2014. Did most of my SoO flex&normal raiding with a pug. Killed Garrosh normal-mode 10-man on my rogue 3 months later. Leveled my warrior, leveled jewelcrafting, made 300k gold on the AH selling gems in 2 months. Did some tanking on the warrior. (First run tanking N25 we even killed Garrosh. First time my pug kill 25N Garrosh). End of May our pug started doing 25H. We raided one night a week only. I had very few other things to do.

Then I bought a pet. I always collected pets. But didn't wanna do pet-battles. Cause it has nothing to do with WoW. I bought a Gilnean Raven. For something like 20g. Good deal. Gilnean Ravens are Alliance specific (I only play Horde). And you can get only 1 per account ever. The weird thing was: I couldn't "learn" the pet. It was level 5. It turned out you have to have a level-5 pet yourself to learn a level-5 pet. So I leveled one pet to level-5, so I could add the Gilnean Raven to my collection.

Then I was lost. I wanted to collect more pets. The pets you can only learn through battling. I spent a week or two leveling a few pets to 25. Capturing loads of others. My first pets to 25 were the Son of Animus, an Untamed Hatchling, a Infected Fawn and a Scorpid. Yep, I had no idea what I was doing.

One of the fun aspects of pet-taming was the fact that you have to travel everywhere through the world. I liked that. I then started doing tamers. And capturing more pets. And leveling more pets. Basically, during July and August, I spent most of my time with pet-battles. In the end, I even did the Celestial Pet Tournament on Timeless Isle. Tbh, you need to be well prepared for the Celestial Tournament. Beating that tournament was probably the achievement that took me the most effort in WoW, since beating Illidan.

Then WoD came. End of WoW.
But I do have fond memories of pet collecting in MoP.
