I know trying to organize things around here is like herding cats but I thought this would warrant its own thread.

And I even asked, so suck it

I'm on Hyjal/Horde currently with a couple of close friends and I thought if I could bring some AT'ers into the fold, we could have what could be a fun WoW group to play with. As, ya know, fun as WoW can be.There's just something hypnotic about pressing "1" over and over again.

Nothing super cereal but just a cool group to do stuffs with. What do we think?

It'd be kind of hard to form a real AT guild so long after the game has started. People don't move around too terribly often (silly Blizzard fees). What are you trying to do... turn this into Ars Technica?

anyone on destromath? I'll totally be in! Would be very fun to be part of a casual group, and my priest can bring heals to the table =)

You could probably put together a lot of good players from AT but no one is going to want to re-roll or transfer servers for $25.

Seriously how does Blizzard get away with charging $25 for a one-line SQL command.

it's a form of control. blizzard is not forcing you to server hop. in order to maintain (minimal) control on people constantly hopping servers, they institute charges for doing so. just be thankful that you even have an option to do so.

Yeah, it's to prevent abuse. At least now we have the option to transfer our character. Back in vanilla if you want to change server, you had to reroll from scratch

Unfortunately, a game like WoW almost requires such functionality if you don't wish users to have to completely start over. I do understand a need for controlling the number of requests, but the price gets so ridiculously expensive for anyone with a decent number of characters.

I may meet new people (IRL) and become good enough friends with them that I may want to play, but given the high fees of server hopping... it will never happen. Especially if I have to go Horde too... $55 for each character? I can afford it, but it's such a terrible waste of money when you consider that I already pay $30 per month as it is.

What's worse is that about 3 years ago a few of my friends decided to mess around as alliance on a separate server and they ended up sticking to those characters. I have two main horde toons that I would love to join them but it'd be a whopping $110 just to move over those characters+race change.

nah if its not expensive people will abuse it - wow has so many drama kiddies that if it was a matter of 5 bucks, people would be jumping everywhere and all over all the time; that would kill the community which is really dominated by raiding every time a pansy fight breaks out. At that point it becomes a totally anonymous game...which it is to most people. TBH, it would be more profitable to keep it cheap than it would be to price it out of what most people are willing to pay.
But by having it expensive, it makes people think thrice before they do it due to the costs and you won't be so quick to bail on your server b/c of an argument with your guild leader.
Trust me if it was 5 bucks I'd have no problem switching servers+ faction transfer, play with friends for a couple of months, and then switch back later when i want to go back. They want your decisions (the side you pick, the server you choose) to have SOME impact and not be a casual decision that can be switched without any serious consideration.

So basically:
(a) to make you really think about your decision when you first roll your character
(b) to prevent abuse for people jumping all over, which would create complaints from the hardcore community, and if the hardcore community gets super mad, then you know your game is in trouble (seems to be that way with most MMOS)

Is it not practical to just create a new character on your friends' server and level him up? My understanding was that doesn't take long in World of Warcraft, and after an expansion, like now, everyone is at more even level as far as equipment goes.

Level? Sure.

Gather 120+ mounts & companions, 11,000 achievement points, 225,000 gold and professions at 525? Fuck no!

You'd also be giving up titles and achievements that are no longer available.

Well, I wasn't suggesting destroying the old character, just creating a new one that's capable of playing with your friends without dragging them down. Do all these things matter as far that goes?

We've got "Country Bear Jambaroo" all lined up and ready to go.
I was debating this but I am not joining a guild with that name. Maybe if it was name so it was known it was the AT guild.

Agreed. I don't really care if the name identifies AT, but at least not something that makes people assume I'm 14 years old right off the bat. I'm not really an RP'er, but IMO the best guild names actually have an RP element to them.

My favorites are ones that have some kind of meaning to them. My favorite was I got to name my old guild and I called it Equanimity.

e·qua·nim·i·ty/ˌēkwəˈnimitē/
Noun: Mental calmness, composure, and evenness of temper, esp. in a difficult situation.

It fit well for our raiding guild.

Why so serious?

There are six million guilds named "Paragon" or "Excellence" or "Sublimation" or some other bullshit that takes a game about giant walking and talking cows too seriously.

Gotta keep a light hear here, fellas I'm not married to a name but I think you've gotta take a step back for a second.

Well a guild name is an image. Theres a guild on my server called "stimpacks tsh aww yeah" and they could be one of the top raiding guilds on the server but I don't care. There are ways to be unique and find a good name without looking like a 4 year old.

For instance theres another guild on my server "Brewdrinkers Anonymous". Its catchy light hearted but it doesn't make them look immature. As I said I'm not a fan of the name. Its too obscure of a reference for people to find amusing so they will think the worst of it.

I agree with everyone else about having a serious guild name. I can't stand stupid guild names and like said before, even though I don't RP, I still prefer something that fits the world. With that said, I probably won't create a toon for this guild, so name it whatever you want.
