ATA66 V. ATA100 and CAS questions..

How much of an improvement is ata100 over ata66?

how would a 5400rpm ata100 drive compare to a 7200rpm ata66 drive? i have both drives.. but i dont know which one to set as primary master.

i have onboard ata100 (msi k7t pro2a)..

should i get a 7200rpm ata100 drive? would the increased transfer rate affect performance significantly?

oh.. and also another question:

is it better to run my ram at PC100 cas2 or PC133 cas3?

I'd appreciate any comments.

The ata66 7200 rpm drive is MUCH quicker than an ata100 5400 drive. Use the 5400 as slave to the 7200 drive.

You are better off running your RAM at CAS3 133MHz. The extra benefit provided by the additional 33Mhz far exceeds the single clock cycle latency penalty of CAS3 over CAS2.

You 7200RPM ATA66 drive will be much faster than the 5400RPM ATA100 drive. ATA66 and ATA100 are maximum burst transfer rates....there are no drives that approach anywhere NEAR the maximum of 66MB/s, let alone 100MB/s.

You ride a bicycle at 33km/h, but the speed limit is 66km/h, there is no point raising the speed limit to 100km/h, is there? Same thing here.

Without knowing what the 2 hard drives are, you can't just blanketly say one is faster than the other. A current generation 5400RPM drive will outperform an old 7200 RPM drive.

Well the IBM 75GXP series can make use of ata/66's bandwidth. And I believe I saw one HT tach result where one shot up to 83 m/sec. though I might be mistaken here. But the performance increase is measured by benchmarks not by human perception.

The IBM 75GXP can make use of the ATA66 bandwidth... the first 4MB of it or so anyway. It maxes around 37MB/s. 83Mb/s was either the burst speed or a terribly inaccurate reading.

Pariah, it was indeed a burst figure and I have no idea what the duration was...probably a fraction of a second.

ATA100 vs. ATA66, no real difference.

I agree with Pariah. It depends on the drives in question. Goto storagereview and select your two drives from the database and see which is faster.

Same for the 75GXP, see if there is much difference from your current drives. Check the realworld link on storagereview about ATA66 vs. ATA100.

PC133 would be faster.
