It makes plenty sense from the perspective that MOST Christian Americans associate Allah with Islam and would thus be vastly offended at having that word in the pledge. Afterall most English speaking Muslims still refer to their god as Allah and don't change that word to English. In fact none I've ever known do.

Seems you're probably right.

"under G-d" was put into the Pledge by a Congress & president who wanted to appease a fearful citizenry who saw Communists around every corner and under their beds (thx Joe McCarthy.)

It has zero to do with patriotism or faith. It should be removed at the most; at the very least the original version should be given credence in public and in schools.

It may have been a reason but it wasn't the only one. The majority of Americans have always been Christian and we do well to honor God by recognizing his authority and bounty.

Those who think otherwise are free to, but the majority rules here.

American Christianity, FOREVER.

The majority only rules if it doesn't contradict the Constitution. Having a mention of a god be in the pledge by law directly contradicts the 1st Amendment. And the beautiful thing about atheism is that it doesn't use indoctrination. Every atheist I've ever known has encouraged critical thinking based on logic and evidence, indoctrination by it's nature expects a belief to hold despite evidence.

The original pledge was just fine as it was; no need to add "under Dog" because of fear.

Honouring Dog is what church and prayer is for; the Pledge of Allegiance was written for and should remain for all Americans, not just Christians.

Check with the USSC, the desires of the majority should not oppress the minority.

Besides, neither the majority or minority got a chance to vote.

American Citizens, FOREVER.

You are confused and sad. What pledge includes "under Dog"? I feel sorry for you (really).

Actually my thoughts are quite clear and seeing your desperate need to inject your deity into every other citizens life brings a smile to my face.

Can't take a joke. I feel sorry for you (not really).

“If you are a Christian you do not have to believe that all the other religions are simply wrong all through. If you are an atheist you do have to believe that the main point in all the religions of the whole world is simply one huge mistake.” - CS Lewis

Atheism is much less tolerant than they like to believe.

This is true for all religious folks as well, minus the one religion they happen to prefer.

Atheism is much less tolerant than they like to believe.

Thinking other people believe in faery tales, and tolerating those people, are different things.

Atheists tend to get intolerant of people trying to force their beliefs on them. They don't tend to force other people to stop believing.

So what's next, we going to have to start having churches take down their crosses cause someone might actually, you know, see one and it offend them?

I don't know a single atheist that wants the above. Put all the crosses you want all over whatever property you own. Completely cover your property with them, make them out of gold, encrust them with diamonds or whatever other crap you so desire.

The issue is with public funds or lands being used, you should know that but being that this is P&N I'm not surprised by the ignorance.

That will be right after the Chinese troops massed at the Canadian and Mexican borders are given the UN ok to invade the U.S.

I believe Lewis would argue that is not true, as some religions get it closer to being right than others, like an arithmetic problem, some answers are closer to being correct than others but there is still only one correct answer. The atheist must believe that everyone single one of them is wrong at once, whereas the Christian can find many of its creeds in other religions.

I read this story yesterday and was amazed at the stupidity and ignorance of the Fox news readers in the comments section.
