I am not an atheists but I am not surprised most would. After all, it is not like they have a moral code to live by so participating in something they don't believe in for profit shouldn't be a problem.

No moral code? You have to subscribe to religion to have morals?
what?
There is no "participation" requirement in church. Most just go there and get talked at by some fancy man.
And most of the participation one can do hardly requires belief in a higher power.
Social functions, donations, volunteer work - all great things to do, and requires no spiritual beliefs. I've volunteered (not through a church), and think volunteer work is a damn good thing. Doing something,
anything, for your community, city, state, or nation, is something everyone should almost be required to do imho.
