Question about the AMD T-Birds...I'm sure this has been asked, but bear with me...I've been an Intel-er all my life...

This question came into my mind I was trying to engineer a post on the cheapest dual athlon arrangement while browsing around on PriceWatch, and then it struck me...

TBird 1.4s come in two flavors: The 266FSB versions and 200FSB versions.
Now, the 200FSB versions cost significantly MORE than the 266FSB versions, presumably to 'deter' o/c-ers. However, the problem lies therein. Since T-Birds are NOT mult-locked, what difference does it make? 200FSB 1.4s are just 7x200, while 266FSB 1.4s are ?x266 (Arg...doesn't come out rite on the calculator...) But I could buy a 266FSB and pump the mult all the way up to 7, and attain a clock similar to that of a 200FSB 1.4 running at 266.

AMD lists them as the same price (130) yet on Pricewatch there's this $13 USD difference...

Help.

Price differences are simply because of the venders who sell them. I can't really explain why they are different prices if amd is selling them at the same price. As for the other part of your question for all prctical purposes they are the same chip. If you want to get technical you can talk with someone named PM around here and he could possibly explain the possible differences in the specs of the chips, but for the rest of us they are the same chip and if you are overclocking go with whatever you can find cheaper, if you are not overclocking go with the 266 Mhz FSB one which coincidentally are the cheaper chips to buy. hope this helps

The 266Mhz CPU will be faster for most purposes due to the higher bandwith available to the CPU.

Just for reference, the 200Mhz and 266Mhz rated speeds are actual BUS speeds of 100Mhz and 133Mhz. The BUS is double-pumped (allows twice as much data) so they are listed at 200 and 266. Therefore, the 200Mhz Tbird is actually 14x100 and the 266Mhz Tbird is 10.5x133...

Both version are capable of running 133 FSB. I guess AMD make the 200 FSB version to accomodate some older KT133 mobo, which run at 100 FSB.
