Edit: price drop to $126
Also note the mobo+cpu combos: some good prices on mobos plus you get free farCry, HL2, and napster downloads.

Note: If you're interested in microATX boards, they have the FoxConn NF4K8MC-ERS for $79. This mobo has performance comparable to the best nf4 boards, and modest overclocking ability - it can do up to 250 mhz, but no voltage adjustments. Since many 3000+ CPUs can overclock 20% at least without voltage increase, you can almost reach 2.2 ghz, which would give you performance of 3500+. And all this for a little over $200 (cpu+mobo) !!!!!!!!!

Edit 2: Price dropped to $119

order this with a motherboard (e.g. Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 for $115) and you get Half Life 2 and Far Cry for free.

4 free months of Napster is more interesting to me. 2 months comming up with a long, long list and 4 months of non-stop downloading

From what I understand your music collection works for only as long as you subscribe to their service.

Sounds great! Good deal. I"m going to wait until it drops below $100. Do you think it will really go down that far? Also, what would be the "best" OC mobo with AGP slot for this cpu? Yeah, I have too many agp vid cards laying around. I'm not going to go with PCI-e for another year or so.

Oh, I forgot..., that is the mobo that can use DDR, not DDR2. I have too many DDR sticks laying around. Actually, DDR2s aren't that expensive. What would be a good mobo that uses DDR2s? Is there really that much difference between DDR and DDR2, other than less heat?

Hi guys,

Sorry for the noob question, but what is the Intel equivalent to the A64 3000+?
I guess what I am asking is, would it be a big/significant upgrade from a p4 2.66ghz I have right now.
And I do game more than the average person. (HL2, WOW, Battlefield, etc.)

"what is the Intel equivalent to the A64 3000+? "

For gaming, it would take around a 3.2 Ghz P4 under the old Northwood core, or a 3.4 Ghz P4 using the newer Prescott core.

FYI for gamers, it should be A64 all the way!!

the nice thing is that you can easily overclock this processor to 2.4 ghz at least, which is the equivalent of 3800+ which is better than any intel processor in existence for gaming. And you don't even need fancy memory which overclocks - you can run the memory at stock DDR400 and you still get all the performance benefits of the CPU.

Just get a good overclocking motherboard, like most nForce4 boards, and nForce3 boards for AGP. I believe than MSI K8N Neo2 is one of the best socket 939 AGP boards around. For PCI-E, the Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 gets great reviews as well as the MSI Neo4.

Can't you burn the music you download from napster on CD-RW ? I'm sure you can. So when you do that the protection is gone, so you can RIP them back in unprotected format. The only downside is that you lose some quality due to the double compression (you download a compressed file, and then when you RIP it, it gets compressed again).

I doubt it, because this is already after a price drop. anyway, it's really cheap to get this CPU+mobo for $250 plus 1GB of PC3200 for around $100, so for total $350 you have the basic components to create a kicka$$ gaming machine (when overclocked to 2.5 ghz). Add a good video card (X800XL for $275), a hardrive for $50, DVD-RW for $50, case+PSU for $50, WinXp 64-bit (free) and you've got a complete machine for less than $800, that can easily top 70K score in aquamark, 13K in 3dmark3, and 6K in 3dmark5. That means it can play ANY game with MAXIMUM detail level at 1280x1024 at very fast frame rates (50 fps or above).

It looks like what makes this processsor so cheap is the warranty .....its only 60 days but you can up that for a little more.

sounds about right 15$ for 3 yr warranty and 8$ for fan = 153 ($3 less than what their price was a few days ago for retail).

So is it better to buy the OEM than the Retail Box?

Any recommendations on what's a good heatsink and fan (hopefully quite) for this processor?

To me it is better to buy it in the box because you get the 3 year warranty where you get most time 1 year on the OEM.I use the Zalman
fan on my Athlon 64 3500+ 90mn 2.4GHz and it keeps it at 28c to 31c.
