I also noticed the cpu price in the combo is not the same, sometimes it's higher and sometimes lower then the standalone OEM price. For example, right now standalone is $149 but combo price is still $129

I noticed newegg has them for $135 shipped now. Not as good, but still better than $149

Oh well...I guess I will need to wait until next week (April 4th) to see if the Venice core releases will be reasonably priced or if they will drive down these Winchester cores even lower. I want to upgrade my computer soon! This waiting game is killing me.

athlon64 3000+ is a little faster then athlon XP at 2.5 ghz in gaming. athlon64 winchester at 2.4 ghz is equivalent to 3800+ which is also faster then the fastest pentium 4's (at stock speed). so it's pretty darn fast. And your memory will not hold you back at all, as overclocking the memory in 939 A64's gives very little performance gain. For reference, overclocking the memory from DDR400 to DD533 gives about 2% increase in frame rates on average in gaming applications. But it is useful to have a memory with low latencies, such as CAS 2.5 or even better CAS 2.

update: doing 2.52ghz @ 1.6vcore now.

jinduy, sorry but I have no idea what's the XP equivalent. um, and i'm using corsair pc3200XL Samsung TCCD chips. and about your value ram- i'd say get some better, more overclockable memory or you can drop the divider.

yeah he can use a divider and that would not affect performance by much. btw, what mobo are you using ? I also just got my CPU but haven't tried overclocking yet. I have the a8n-sli mobo.

Ordered the combo on Sunday with the 3000 + and the MSI RS480M2-IL mobo and Thermaltake A1770 heat sink and fan with 3 day shipping for $252. Not too shabby, considering Fed Ex shows 2 day shipping and I'll have it by Wednesday night. Considering this is a PCI-e mobo, it has a fairly decent onboard video which means i don't have to go out and buy a new pci-e vid card right away. I'll let ya know how it turns out. Going to be running 2700 memory on it right now too so I have some room to expand but the good news is it will be functional, considering my xp 2100 has just toasted 3 separate xp installs. I've seen way too much of the blue screen of death lately and that nice black screen that says "OS could not be found" 64 bits of goodiness...ummy

also forgot the Free Half-life 2 and Farcry....yummy

not sure if you can really play these games on the integrated video.....also this board does not over clock, but on the positive side it has respectable stock performance and very decent integrated video, so it would be good as a general purpose machine, file server or even HTPC.

btw, the other micro-atx board they have is FoxConn NF4K8MC-ERS ($79) which doesn't have integrated graphics, but has very nice performance and a small overclocking potential (up to about 20% on the CPU/FSB). I recommend it for micro-atx machines.

Just snagged one myself for $125, was $135 + $10 coupon code I received from Monarch by email. Free shipping.

I dont wish to share the code, because I dont know if it was specific to one person, so please dont PM me. I am just sharing the wealth to those who receive emails from them.

Well, it was $149.99 yesterday, so it dropped $15 dollars. I think its still a hot deal for those that can get a hold of a coupon code.

well, I finally took the A64 3000+ (code: CBBID 0507) I got couple of weeks out of the FoxConn motherboard it came with (which has very little overclocking options) and swapped it with the one installed in my A8N-SLI mobo. I overclocked and it maxed out at 270x9=2430 mhz which is a little better then my previous 3000+ (CBBFD 0443) which could only do 265x9=2385. Both on the A8N-SLI mobo with memory at 5/6 divider (cpu/11) and on 1.57 Vcore. So it's a little disappoing that out of two CPUs neither could reach the magical 2.6 GHz or above.

Did you verify stability at 2.52 GHz ? Mine is prime95 stable for at least two hours (so far).

Just got mine today. Monarch was kind enough to upgrade my shipping to 2 day Fedex for free, and I received a CBBID 0508 stepping. I am kinda bummed because I heard it was a bad stepping, but only time will tell.

I am still waiting on my motherboard to show up from Newegg, and HS/Fan from Jab-tech, so I got a lot of waiting to do...

The price is back up to $149 but the price of the 3000+ cpu as part of a combo is still $129 !!!! also good prices on motherboards - MSI Neo4-F $87 !! that's almost as cheap as Fry's combos for a socket 754 2800+ ecs mobo which would get owned by this combo - and you don't pay tax !!!

Don't waste your time on this cpu. Wait one week for the Venice...One company is preordering for April 18th release, so its obviously close. Patience will pay off. Even if you want this CORE, it will more than likely drop in price after Venice is released.

got mine from Monarch a few weeks back. i'm at 2.52GHz (280*9) @ 1.475v. OCCT & Prime95 (15 hours) stable

highest voltage i tried was 1.55 and that didn't gain me much but 1-2Mhz so i ratcheted down the voltage again. may try some burn-in stuff and higher V's in a couple of days. i'm sick of staring at those bios screens for the moment!

love the no CA sales tax from Monarch!

edit: i'm currently using a DFI UT LanParty Ultra-D w/ 3/31-3 beta bios

I agree about waiting for the venice, but you're wrong if you think price will drop on winchester because these prices (around $125) are already extremely close to the factory price and cannot drop any further. AMD sells all revisions and socket types of similarly rated cpu's at the same price - this means factory price for winchester and venice will be the same, and is not expected to be cut any time soon. See how socket 754 cpus costs the same as socket 939, etc.

But you can count on vendors to initially gouge on Venices therefore it will be more expensive in the beginning but should soon come down to the same price as winchester. Just don't expect the winchester to become cheaper - $125 for a 3000+ winnie is as low as you could possibly hope to get it anytime soon (at least a year in my opinion)
