Searched and didn't find so here goes.
Retail A64 3500+ with an ECS K8T890A motherboard for 199.99. I don't know it the CPU is Venice core (90 nm) or Clawhammer (130 nm). Newegg has each CPU for 201 to 205 plus a buck shipping and the mobo is 63.99 with 4.99 shipping so the Fry's deal is basically get the mobo for free. Might be good at Fry's in other areas. Post is you know.

I still dont get why fools say socket 939 is dead.... How is it dead. People with opterons that oc to 3ghz dont matter when am2 comes out? What the? Who cares about AM2. DDR2 mem, woopdido. DDR2 mem is slower than DDR. Why do people think a new socket warrants completly upgrading to new mobo, CPU and Mem. I dont get it. Everyone has a dual core by now that ocs to 2.5ghz or higher. What is a new socket going to offer over everything that 939 can currenty do?

Everything will be finally discontinued, but when you purchase something you need to think about the specific timing for yourself. For example, a friend of mine went to a scion dealership last may and asked when the 2006 models come in and was told it will be towards the end of the year, around november or so, which in fact was not true cause the 2006 models were availalbe for sale two weeks after he bought his 2005. So if he waited two weeks and bought the 2006 (which cost the same) his car's resale value would be $2000 higher becuase it would be a newer model year. So he got pwned just like whoever is buying a 939 system does.

AMD will not stop making 939 CPUs for a LONG time. We are talking into well into 2007. Yes, they will slow down production, but they will not cut it.
So anyone who is looking at getting a 939 pin CPU, go for it. It will be one of the best deals you get. Then after 6 months-1 year or so, you can pick up the fastest available 939 pin CPU at a steep discount, and that will make it so you don't have to upgrade to the newer platfrom until late 2007-early 2008. That is, if you find that your system isn't fast enough.
Most people will be fine with a 939 pin CPU & a Nvidia 7800 (for example) well into 2007, if not 2008.
If the M2/AM2 is really a concern, you can then get a motherboard that supports BOTH the 939 & M2/AM2 sockets. Like the ASROCK 939Dual boards.

The problem I have at Frys is that you have to stand in a line for up to 45 minutes at their "Component counter" before you get the "hot deal" they advertise. If you are unlucky and get the "clueless" guy helping you he will deny such a deal exist and only showing the fricking add will help. Very frustrating sometimes.

OMG this is as bad as people saying socket 754 is dead. Get over it. Socket 7 is buried as far as latest software is concerned. Socket 370 is starting to smell funny because the highest end games won't run well (or at all) on them. Socket A has a cane but is thwapping everyone with it like the grouchy old socket it is, saying "sonny, why, back in my day I could run Windows 2000 Pro with a stick of RAM tied behind my back." Socket 478 and 754 is like your older brother - try as you might, you just can't outrun them.

My socket-A Shuttle AN35 (which I picked up at Fry's for $36) with XP-M 2500 is still going strong. It is about to be replaced by Sempron 2800+ combo deal I picked up earlier this week (waiting for a HSF)
The XP-M 2500 (great overclocker) will finally replace my wife's Dell P3 800. The XP-M 2500 with Shuttle NF2 has been such a good system that it was my main system till I got a new x2 3800+ on the Thanksgiving sale.

I bet you after 5 minutes of using my system your xp-m 2500 will seem like a bad dream that you'll never want to use again

ah, but even that's not dead yet...just cause it's not the newest doesn't mean it's dead.

Oh, and cars are totally different...they have model years and come out every year, sockets don't. But whatever floats your boat.

Picked up the 3800 X2 and the K8T890A combo today.
I look forward to trying it out. I've read in a few places that the ECS motherboard leaves much to be desired for OCability, but it's a good bridge for me until I've decided on a PCIe graphics board.

you are a dick. not everyone wants/is willing to spend that much on a computer. most people wont use high end components to their full potential anyway. some of the better sellers at frys are actually their 2800 and 3100+ sempron deals and by your logic those are older than dirt. oh yeah and guess what, the guy you are talking trash about has a 3800+ x2... i dont know what kind of video card he has, but processor-wise it would spank your system. stop trying to be an e-badass because it just makes you look ignorant.

back to the topic, this combo is a pretty decent deal but i agree with the others... the 3800+ x2 combo for 279 is a better buy. im half considering getting the x2 for my HTPC because i occassionally play games on it.

If you just have one system, building a fast, powerful system make sense.

My x2 3800+ system is for software development, though I did get an EVGA 7800 GT.

3100+ system is getting put together as a HTPC. It needs to be fast enough to handle the demand of HDTV decoding & MCE 2005 quarks, but I want this system to run quiet. So overclocking is not a big factor.

If you build a HTPC with x2, be sure the software (some games as well) can deal with the dual core, or you will need to pin the CPU affinity. More patches are becoming available though.
