I was thinking about using this heatsink with this fan. Would this be a decent combo. Also would the fan exceed my MB fan headers specs? I have a Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939 MB.

Thanks

Probably ok, but you dont need or want anything over 50/60CFM for the CPU fan, after that the extra air does nothing but make noise.

I'd look at some slower fans, 1200 or 1400 rpm should be more than enough for a CPU fan.

I agree with Howard. Get the SI-120 instead of the XP-120; it fits on more motherboards and has better performance. Also, DO NOT get the aluminum fan you linked to. It's got closed holes for the fan and since TR's clips attach to the bottom-most hole on the fan, you would not be able to attach it to the cooler.

With a hacksaw (or something similar) and a pair of pliers, you can easily mod the corners so that they're open.

To OP: What's your priority? 1)Whisper-Silence? 2)Silence? 3)Performance? 4)Extreme-Performance?

The noise from a fan is predominantly decided by the fan's RPM. Sure manufacturers talk their gimmikcs here and there, but it's my conclusion. What's important is the RPM you're going to set/use, not the fan manufacturer. I somethines fancy a "Pepsi" test of various fans, say, Y-L fan sppining @2000RPM and Big Typhoon fan @2000RPM. Would people be able to tell? I'm not sure. Y-L fan is great, no doub, it's well built and give options to both connnectors (3-pin mobo, 4-pin molex) but the reason why it's not noisy is because it has low RPM. That's the No.1 factor of the silenceness.

In reality, it's very easy to control fan speed either via wires or via software. Just get pefromance HSF and if you think the fan is too loud, get a fan controller or do a symple mod to feed less voltages to the fan.

I would like performance with reasonable silence. The only reason I originally suggested the aluminum fan was I already have it. If there is a fan that will work better im willing to consider it.

If you've already got it then i wouldn't worry, you'll need to use cable ties or similar to secure the fan to the heatsink i expect (or cut the corners). But undervolted it should be ok.

The yate loon Howard linked to is a good choice if you feel those $ burning a hole in your pocket though.

i have this heatsink
AK-859 which was left over from my old 754 system that went.
then i mounted it with
Silent Cat 120

using a fan adapter.
my cpu is at 32 celcuis idle, and 44 when running prime95 which isnt bad i dont think.

I don't find it loud, but everyone has different noise level tolerances.
