Athlon and RAIN - any use

will rain help in cooling an athlon. i had good exp with the k6-2's.

but with the athlon 650 of mine, there doesn't seem to be much of a cooling.

Good question. What operating system are you using? The Athlon certainly runs warm. Do you have a retail box 650? It seems that they tend to run warmer then OEM with GOrb.

I am having the exact same experience with my Athlon 650. Not a single degree cooler with Rain installed and running. Funny because everyone gives Rain such good reviews. Also,mine is oem and runs between 90 and 95f overclocked or not.

When I had a Pll-300, running rain would make from 10 to 12 degrees difference. Then I replaced my MB with a KA7 and Athlon 750. Not 1 degree of difference.

ya, mine is a retail (boxed) 650 came with the amd h/s and fan, running on abit ka7-100 on win98 SE.
i am not overclocking for now, but did run it at 748 by incr the fsb.

Rain seems no use, so i removed it.

So whats the conclusion, junk rain for Athlons!!!!!!!!

Do not use Rain with an Athlon. It was never designed to be compatible with the architecture of the chip. If you want some sort of CPU idling software, the only one that I'm pretty will work with an Athlon is CPUidle v5.x (which I really don't like).

If you need CPUIdle, then your cooling setup isn't up to snuff maybe.

Nah, run a cracking utility instead...

I've never been sold on these "software" coolers..

I am always running RC5, so even if my Athlon WOULD work with one of these programs, it would be useless due to the fact that my CPU is constantly in use..
