why bother? you can pick up a AthlonXP new for $110. i personally overclocked my 1600+ to 1900+ (from 10.5 x 133 [1400 MHz] to 12 x 133 [1600 MHz]). and you get SSE to boot. plus wait a few weeks (most likely the 20th) and the 0.13 Thoroughbred Athlons will come out and everything else will drop.

i for one wish there was a tracking software for newegg.
i know they have their autonotify button setup .
but from my experience, it doesn't work too well.
i guess the demand is too great... and supply is very limited.

i've been waiting to order liteon 24x from their refurb stock.
and i check pretty often.
but every time i check...it's either out of stock or not listed.

do we have an inside sales rep from newegg here in AT?
if not... we ought to.
with all the business AT'ers are giving them.

I wish I have the .. um... nerve to overclock my XP

I just bought the 1700+ for $115 (monarch computers). It's an AGOGA and should probably overclock quite well. Just don't have the guts to burn (literally) $115 if the super glue or silver paint goes in the wrong place

Well not everyone has the time, resources, nerves, skills etc. to unlock a Athlon XP. Which is why I'm getting a Thunderbird over it.

"Refurb" doesn't mean anything other than the fact that somebody may have returned the piece and the company takes a look at it to see if it works...then resells it again as a refurb. If it goes back as far as the mfg then yes, maybe the item actually got repaired. Some vendors might get a line on these and move them out for the mfg. In the case of places like Newegg I would think that the refurbs fall somewhere in the middle of these categories...

actually a Athlon 1400 MHz OCed to 1600 MHz would probably beat an AthlonXP 1600+. the 1600+ is actually clocked at 1400 MHz. the performance gain of the Palomino core versus the Thunderbird core is not great enough to offset 200 MHz i think. BUT, i do say that a 1600+ would OC to 1900+ with little work.

btw, i don't have the nerve to do the superglue trick either, so i bought the AthlonXP OC kit from highspeedpc. no superglue, no solder, just some paste to fill the hole and some nonpermanent conductive paste to close the bridge. the first time i tried, it didn't work, so i just wiped it away and tried again. second time was the charm =) the kit was $10 and there is probably enought there to do about 20 chips.

AMD (Palomino) Athlon XP 1600+ which actually runs at 1.4 GHz is conservatively rated to suggest it equals an AMD (Thunderbird) Athlon 1.6GHz.
[The XP PR+ ratings are in comparison to AMD Thunderbird Athlons, not Pentiums as some people might think.]
Anyway, the key word is conservatively rated. Its architecture is different so there shouldn't be any doubt that
AMD Athlon XP 1600+ (1.4GHz) is, for a lack of a better word, better, than a AMD Thunderbird overclocked to 1.6GHz.
I therefore disagree with yodayoda that "...actually a Athlon 1400 MHz OCed to 1600 MHz would probably beat an AthlonXP 1600+."

yodayoda-wasnt saying that it would beat the 1600+ overclocked...he was saying it would beat it at stock speed.

I stand corrected, indeed someone at overclockers forum tested the CPU's and concluded that "at 115% of the T-Bird 1.4 (1.61GHz) the T-Bird would exceed the XP 1800+ at stock speed..."
This is because "the performance of the T-Bird 1.4 was the base line used by AMD for all of the XP ratings and that all revisions were to go up by approximately 3%."

Overclocking does knock out higher rated CPU's, but ofcourse only if they are at stock speed - meaning not overclocked themselves.

Refurbished actually means returned to factory specs via reconditioning or repair, however, Newegg should not be allowed to use this term and should have to rightfully market them as used. Newegg does nothing but resell returns. They don't even test them to see if they function. I've received a couple of non-working Newegg "refurbs".
