Hey all

I would like to know if anyone of you have tried to OC this new processor? I'm gonna buy this one, and would just like to know what to expect. When im googling it, all i get is a lot of reviews and not alot of detailed info on OC'ing it.

Also how much could i expect to bump it with the stock cooler?

Thanks in advance.

Im not sure what you mean? The Stock cooler is enough, even when overclocking to 3.7?
Yeah i saw that article before, but im not really sure which cooler they use.... I can't really find the test system at all used in that article.

First, let me recant my statement. The core-temp screen was for the Intel, which I read for the AMD.

But if it doesn't state a custom HSF, I think it might be safe to assume they went with a stock HSF. After all, it is supposed to be a review of the retail CPU.

That being said, it doesn't state how high the temperatures get with the overvolt. Personally, I would try it with the stock HSF first and then if the temperatures get too hot, then buy a custom HSF. Of course this is where someone else needs to chime in, I don't know what temperatures the 250 goes for.

I know that on my Kuma, even at 1.45v the stock cooler keeps it under 65C on load.

Hey Eureka.

Thanks alot for the clarification.

I also have a question regarding choice of chipsets. Originaly i was going to buy a 780G based mobo. After further reading it seems that the 790 line of chipsets are much better suited especially when overclocking. Will a 790G give me a great advantage compared to the 780G when overclocking? Or is that only the case with the Phenom II line of processor?

780G: GA-MA78GM-US2H
790GX: ASRock AOD790GX/128M

That and the CMOS for the 790X series uses a 65nm process, while the 780G uses a 55nm process.

Thanks again Eureka.

Would any one else care to elaborate a bit on the chipset issue presented above?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for all the help Eureka, i have the feeling this topic wont go any further right now.

I have done some more homework and settled for this board:

Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-US2H (rev. 2.0)

You see, this particular board actually fullfills all my needs.
1) Its cheap, maybe because its 780G based i dont know
2) Since Rev. 2.0 the board has been fitted with SB710 instead of SB700. The SB710 chip incorporates almost all the features from SB750, except Raid 5. But SB710 HAS ACC.

So yeah. Thanks. I'll keep you posted on how it performs.

the 790X is a different chipset than the 790GX.

The X has no IGP and is 65nm. the 790GX is a 780G that is higher clocked and 55nm.

I thinkt he 790X is more related to the 770 which is also 65nm. I think the main difference between the 790x and 770 is that the 790x can split the pci-e slot into 2 for crossfire.

Have you had any success in finding a supplier for the Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-US2H (rev. 2.0) board yet in the US ?

I am interested as well but have not been able to find it in stock yet.

Thanks

I'd probably recommend you to grab the Phenom II X2 550 instead. It's the 3.1Ghz dual core with 6mb L3 cache.

the phenom II x2 545 is actaully also out. and would be an ok choice (i think it might be just barely more expensive than a 250)

i've heat it can do 3.7 to 3.8 ghz.

I just got one, and my board has full voltage and multiplier and HT controls, so maybe I will give it a shot (sadly my power supply is 120watts... overclocking a mini ITX box has got to be new)
