This was in the Phoenix AD

Retail Boxed CPU and mobo, limit 1 of course

So if your near a Fry's and they have this deal, enjoy it!

Edit: Oh there's a stick of 512 PC133 Ram for 24.99 as well. Need to upgrade a machine? $105 for cpu/mb/memory is tough to beat
Also a Maxtor 60GB UD133 7200rpm HD (2mb Cache) for $58.99

Heh, I really don't need another computer...but I'm tempted...

Anyone know if this is available in SoCal? I know of the Fryday ad in the times/register but what other days of the week do the ads show up in SoCal and where?

Same here in San Jose Bay Area.

It even mentioned on AD that it's a new Thoroughbred core.

Go get it now.

Yes, it *is* available in the So Cal area. The Valley Edition of the LA Times has this ad on the back of the Business Section. (Limit 1 per Customer)

This is a *Great* deal. I built my first PC using a K7S5A/ 950 MHz Durom deal from Fry's about a year ago. (That cost $89 at the time.)

I'm tempted to buy this even though I don't need another computer.

Hi,

Is the San Jose area ad available online? I am on the East Coast and was going to ask a friend in SJ to pick this up for me. If you can point me to a link for the SJ ad, I can email it to him.

Also:
- is the original packaging good enough for my friend to ship it to me or should he repack it for shipment?
- what is Fry's return policy on these items? Do they take returns? Do they give refunds or store credit only? Any restocking fees?
- If the ad appeared in SJ Mercury News, the date & page #?

Thanks very much,
gard

I picked up their half gig of RAM a couple weekends ago when it was $30 to put on my KT7. Almost instantly I was getting corrupted files and programs that wouldn't load. Hoping that it was a conflict with either of my two smaller sticks of RAM I ran the new with one stick of old, and then the other stick of old. Same problem. Going back to my old RAM everything fixed itself and was fine again. This was running at normal RAM speed, nothing special turned on, and CAS 3. When I returned it (not going to exchange due to 25 mile round trip and lack of time/patience for such things) the guy at Fry's said that this happens with the bargain-bin RAM.

Frustrating, as the KT7 isn't a crap motherboard. A bit gray around the muzzle, but not crap.

Buy their cheap RAM with caution.

With that said, it looks like I'll be hunting down some reviews on the K7S5A mainboard...

One of the reason's I posted this, was that I have this exact same machine at home.

Works great, even with the bargain bin RAM. That being said, you're chances of getting a bum stick of RAM are definately higher (Ditto on getting a bum Motherboard)

Chances are you won't, but there's always that risk.

And for the folks that don't have a Fry's near you, I apologize, didn't mean to rub salt in the wounds...

Aldric, you might mention in the subject line that these deals are Wednesday, Nov. 27 only. The Wednesday ads are generally good Thursday as well, but Arbeit Macht Fry's will be closed Fressgiving.

Other Bay Area Fry's deals that might interest folks:
18" airflow floppy cable, $4
Linksys USB Network adapter, $50 with $10 MIR, $40
Modem, free after $20 MIR
DVD Home Theater System, 5 satellite speakers, subwoofer, $117
ATI Radeon 128 MVB 9000 Pro video card, $90 after $50 MIR
plus the Maxtor 60 GB for $59 & the 512 MB SDRAM stick for $25 mentioned elsewhere are also in the BA.

The retail T-bred XP1700+ alone is about $65 at Newegg, so you are getting the motherboard for $15. To bad the POS K7S5A is so picky about RAM or I'd be tempted to buy a cheap gig for $50 for the sucker. As it is, I've got a nice Duron 800 lying around the house that I can slap in the K7S5A, while I reserve the T-bred for a mobo that can easily overclock it. I gather that with the KT400 chipset these processors come factory unlocked up to the 12.5 multiplier and that the CPU bridges are not laser cut, so it is relatively easy to connect them and unlock the multiplier.

Hi,

Bob's right. The on-board LAN controller on my K7S5A was kaput 6 months after installation. I installed a PCI NIC and it has been fine. With Win2K, the machine takes forever to boot though. The "starting windows" progress bar on the initial splash screen goes about 2/3 of the way and doesn't move for the next 5 minutes. After that, it does boot and everything is fine. I suspect my Actiontec Firewire card causes that.

Here's a tip for selecting a K7S5A at Fry's. Look for a new sealed box that does *not* have the dreaded "Fry's Returned Item" sticker on it. Sure, it might be just fine but why take a chance?

I don't know if this is intentional or not, but my local Fry's (Burbank, CA) tends to have all of the returned K7S5A boxes within easy reach while the new boxes might take some digging. When I boiught my K7S5A, I had to pull a box off a high shelf.

So, where do I put in a request to get a Fry's up here in Seattle? .... lol. Is there a 12-step program for Fry's envy? How about a forum dedicated to AT'ers buying stuff at Fry's and selling it to other AT'ers?

Sigh... good deal.

Just bought the combo this morning.

The CPU is retail boxed Thoroughbred(AIUGA core).

I will try to overclock tonight to see how high it can go.
