Athlon XP 1700+ and K7S5A mobo 79.99 at Fry's...

Sure as hell is hot...I remember getting my K7S5A and 1700 XP for $160 from bzboyz...

of course, that was back in February.

Its a boxed set. Fan+Cpu in the AMD box. Its fine if you don't overclock it.

I bought this exact combo about 6 months ago...(Paid a lot more for it, but )

XP Pro runs great on it, no problems at all.

I have 2 of them, both with the el' cheapo RAM/CPU/ECS MB, with GF3 Ti 200 video cards. Fast enough to get about 7000 on 3dmark 2001, on the lowest settings...

Anyone have problems using Pc133 with this? I just would hate to recommend something to someone and have problems with it later. Newegg had so so reviews so this seems kind of like a "hope I get a good board" deal.

I running my K7S5A/950 MHz Duron with two 128 meg sticks of PNY PC133 memory. No problems after about a year of use.

CPU's and mobo's (and some other things like cd-rw) have a 14 day return policy. No restocking fee if it is opened and has everything inside.

You get refunds.

Pretty easy to return stuff, I think that's why there's alot of the returned stickered items on the shelves.

I built this PC to play some of the older games, such as Half Life that were never going to make it to the Mac platform. For that purpose, it has worked out great. I'm running a Voodoo3 2000 that I picked up for ~$20 on eBay.)

I built the entire computer, sans monitor and CD-RW drive for about $240. If you include the $60 17" monitor that I picked up in last year's Black Friday sale at Staples, and a $30 16x CD-RW burner from Best Buy, the total system cost was $330. Of course, much better deals can be found today.

I can't comment on playing some of the newer games since I haven't tried them.

And here's another caution: PCI based video cards have been known to cause a "crackling" sound problem with the K7S5A motherboard. I don't know if this problem has been corrected through a BIOS update or not but you might want to get an AGP card just to be safe. (I bought my PCI based Voodoo3 before I read about this problem.)

And another couple of comments:

1) I bought an inexpensive Thermaltake Volcano 5 to cool my 950 MHz Duron but it is a bit loud. Maybe someone else here can recommend a quieter cooler.

2) Some people strongly believe that you want to pair the K7S5A with a high quality power supply. I ended up with a 340 Watt Enlight PS and that has worked out fine.

I just bought one of each, the P4 2.4/533 & MSI and the AMD 1700 & ECS just a half hour ago. I have to check if I can put PC2700 in the ECS or do it only take PC2100? I was thinking of getting a Sparkle 300W for the P4 2.4 but I'm not sure if that one is powerful enough. Good deal.

Beware of the manual for the m/b -
There are a couple versions out there. The first one I got from Newegg had the wrong pinout for the main jumpers and the screening was so poor we could not read it.. M/b did not work. Returned it, got replacement, downloaded CORRECT manual, fired up and worked fine ever since.

I read on one forum of an employee of Fry's that said something like lot's of the K7S5A's are returned, and almost all of them work fine, it's just a jumper problem.

/edit - We need a Fry's in the DC area!!

Need advice from you experts. I got the K7s5a bundle today great deal . I also got the soyo kt400 dragon plat and 2100 XP deal tues. Should I return the kt400 dragon and 2100XP and get the Intel 2.4 GHZ MSI bundle. Which was a better deal? The 2100XP or 2.4Ghz Intel MSI. Same price.

dunno how much you paid for the xp, i missed that post.
but with the 2.4, you're pretty much getting the mobo free.

Damn all this; I saw those ads in SanJose Mercury this morning; I was about to go there and probably buy both combos plus Maxtor (have one already and love it) plus 2 sticks of 512MB PC133; suddenly my wife decided that she needs to do a few things and be back in about 2.5 hours...that was before noon and now is f.....g 6:30PM, and she's still not back ....

It's version 3.1, just like any new K7S5A that you buy nowadays would be.

I got this deal today and I'm wondering if I should use the retail HS/fan or a GC68 that I have. The GC68 is bigger with a biffer fan (more quiet maybe?) but I heard something about the Thoroughbred's requiring the HS to be copper where it touches the CPU.

Anyone seen a good deals there on DDR? Was thinking to get PC133 for that Athlon combo, but would rather get DDR if they would some decent deal..but think DDR is rather expensive these days. Any idea how much Fry's want for stick of 512MB DDR today?
