Athlon XP 2600+ on Chaintech SKT600

hi all,

i recently assembled this computer:

athlon xp 2600+ (barton)
chaintech skt600 mobo
512mb pc3200 mushkin ram
512mb pc3200 corsair ram
radeon 9600 256mb

first of all, i'm not planning on oc'ing or anything.

the mobo has a jumber to set the fsb. so i set it from 133Mhz (default) to 166Mhz. however, the computer just shuts down itself after around 15-20mins of being powered on. then i try to power it on again but it crashes, this time on the winxp welcome screen. after it "cools" down awhile, i might be able to run it for a little longer but that's about it, it still crashes.

i actually had a speeze hsf installed with this cpu on ANOTHER mobo, which i rma'd back because of bad primary ide channel (before i placed it on the skt600). so im thinking this might be my hsf. im using this same hsf but didn't replace the thermal pad or anything. so this might be it. just asking what you guys think..

as of now, im underclocked at 2000+ (1.54Ghz).

Since you didn't replace the thermal pad, or remove it and apply thermal compound, I'm gussing heat is the culprit.

Are you monioring temps? If not d/l motherboard monitor 5 and do so.

You'll prolly need to remove the HS and clean off the old thermal pad (use alchohol, at least 91% pure). get some thermal compound, even the $2 tube from Radio Shack will work. If you haven't done this b4, go to instructional sites like the one at Arctic Silver for instructions (a lilltle dab will do ya!).

Yep, it turned out to be that my temps were going around 70C, even only on 1.1Ghz.. quite hot I should say. I'm gonna buy some thermal compound soon, but ever since I messed with the original thermal wax in my HS, I'm getting around 45-50C on 1.9Ghz.
