athlon xp 2700, or xp 2700 333???

Say you order two OEM processors from an online store. One is an athlon xp 2700, and one is an athlon xp 2700 333 with 3dnow. They arrive, and they are both labelled by the reseller as xp 2700's. How do I know which one is the 333? Is it labelled on the chip somewhere by AMD? The numbers on the chip read:

is that the 2700 or the 2700 333?

i'm not sure. i don't think i ever did know what exactly a barton was and what the other one was called or what the difference was.

These are the Athlon XP revisions:

Palomino: .15 microns, 266MHz FSB, 256kB L2 cache

Thoroughbred: .13 microns, 266MHz FSB, 256kB L2 cache

Thoroughbred B: .13 microns, 333MHz FSB, 256kB L2 cache

Barton: .13 microns, 333MHz FSB/400MHz FSB, 512kB L2 cache


The Athlon XP 2700+ is a "Thoroughbred B" revision.

I did notice that the athlon 2800 is a barton running a 333fsb with a 512k cache, but only at 2.08GHz where the 2700 runs at 2.18GHz. Is the 2800 better even though it's slower? How do the tradeoffs compare to one another?...

You have to look at the performance ratings, ex. 2800+, 2700+.

That's why the 2800 is a bigger number than the 2700. The extra 256kB of L2 cache makes up for lost MHz.

In the case of the 2800, there is also the Thoroughbred B version clocked at 2.241GHz with 256kB of cache. The Barton version clocked at 2.08, but with 512kB of cache. They perform similarly, although in some cases the one with the higher clock speed wins, most of the time the one with more cache will win. Plus if you ever think of Overclocking your hardware, you would want the one with the less clockspeed as that one generates less heat, while maintaining a high performance compared to it's Thoroughbred B brother.

Actually the 2700 runs ate 2.158GHz.

You can identify who is who from the code they have.
AXDA2700DKV3D the one you posted is :
Athlon XP 2700, 333FSB, 256 L2 cache
The last letter is the FSB of the CPU. D is for 333, C is for 266 and B is for 200
The number before that (3 in your case) is the L2 cache and it stands for 1=64kb, 2=128kb, 3=256kb, 4=512kb

AMD has a pdf that tells how to identify each cpu from their code.
