I just purchased an athlon xp 2700+ thoroughbred and i was wondering how it
compared to processors such as the intel P4 2.8 and to other athlon chips such
as comparable semprons and 64s, and in this comparison is the difference noticable. I bought this chip for $76 and because all of the info i found on it said that it was 2.17 GHz which is comparable to the
xp3000 and at a much cheaper price. The goal of this build is to build the
best computer we can but on a college pocketbook. Below is what we have so
far. What do you think?

XP 2700+ thoroughbred
MSI K7N2 Delta2-LSR motherboard
g force fx5700LE video card
Seagate 120 Gb hard drive
512 mb Hyper X 3200 ram i know its not necessary but i got a great deal
16x dvd burner
16X dvd read only drive
floppy drive
linksys wireless G card
demon atx 480 watt power supply
speeze cooling fan
POWMAX Silver ATX Mid Tower Case

If your "Cooling Fan" is actually an HSF unit for the cpu, say so, and say which one (there are many different Speeze/Spire hsf types). If you will do any game-playing at all, you will probably find the AMD XP you're getting is faster than a 2.8 GHz Pentium.

You have one "weakness" in your parts list. I have an FX 5700 LE myself, and it's relatively puny for its cost. Instead of finding out too late, don't repeat my mistake. Go ahead and get a Radeon 9600 right off from the start. I'm not familiar with your power supply brand. Personally. I like to stick with known good quality PSU's from reputable brand names.

i dont plan on doing much gaming, therefore i figured the fx 5700LE would be ok, what makes the Radeon 9600 so much better? The power supply is a powmax demon 480W PSU. And the cooling fan as stated above is the heat sink it is a 5F353 speeze from tiger direct( yes i know not the best website) the title for the HSF is "Speeze / Socket A / AMD Athlon XP up to 3400+/ Ball Bearing/Blue LED / Copper Core / CPU Cooling Fan" didnt know much about them, but this one seemed decent and matched other components. Thanks for the help!! any other thoughts?

Powmax's power supplies, all of them, Demon and all, are seemingly very low quality items. I wouldn't put one in any computer I wasn't assembling for someone already ranked as an enemy, whether they were aware I had rated them such or not. I have a Powmax "450 watt" psu here that weighs much less than an Allied 250 watt that was in use daily for ten years in a series of old PC's. It's about the same weight as an old PS2 (not Play Station, it was an IBM type then) 140 watt I had in the spares pile when the Powmax case arrived and I yanked its PSU out.

I have that very same mobo, but I'm running an unlocked barton 2500+ and my bios see's an Xp3100+ at 2.22 ghz, and I'm going to say I don't see any differance at all with my:

Xp 2500+ @ 2.22
512mb DDR400
BFG6800oc

against my dads:

P4 3.0 Pentium 4
1gb Ram
Radeon 9800 Pro

It's like barely a thread of differance.
