just why in gods name would you want an XP 3200?
an Athlon 64 3200+ is cheaper, and a 3500+ is 30 dollars more.

Please dont make the mistake of upgrading you cpu with another obsolete cpu, because you dont have the cash to buy a new mobo, video card and so on. You are just wasting your money. I even bet that with a 30 dollar heatsink you can overclock your 2200+ to a 3200+ or at least a 3000+

Please, if you dont want to spend tons of money, at least get a cheap 939 mobo for 70-80$ and get a A64 3200+ Venice. Then get a Thermalright xp120 and overclock the 3200+ to 2.4-2.6 ghz. Thats equivalent to a 4000+ almost.

I think there is only one XP 3200, the 2.2ghz 512k Barton. Anyway, I would not recommend buying one of those. They are pretty much only available on ebay and are very expensive there just because they are the fastest socket A processors available.

I sold mine there two weeks ago for $180, and I bought it sometime in mid-2004 for $200. You can get a sempron and a 754 motherboard for less than that. I can't imagine why anyone would pay so much for it, but I'm not complaining.

Actually socket A is still good these days. I got one in my htpc and it runs flawless. However don't buy these CPUs new (way over priced due to super low inventory), try ebay or FS/FT forums and try to get used ones cheap. If you are truely on a budget, you can try getting a 2500+ and over clock it to 2ghz or 2.2ghz. A little more money could get you an XP-mobile 2500+ or higher, those babies overclock quite high.

Even when you could get the 400 MHz version of the XP 3000, and the 3200, the cost vs. performance ratio was poor at the prevailing prices. The XP-M's always offered a far better value, and a good one ran faster than the 3200 could; an average XP-M merely matched a 3200's speed, although at a lower fsb speed.

It means they work better than a Thoroughbred because the onboard cache is larger.

You've aready heard that the price for what you want greatly exceeds that of the s754 variety of AMD A64 cpu. It's true at retail, and it's even more true on eBay! Six months ago, you could get an XP-M 2500 on eBay for about $80. Now, it will cost you $120, and will still be slower than most any comparable s754 cpu (not sure about the slowest Sempron in that form). If you want to gamble on an ECS (I don't trust 'em), places like Outpost regularly sell s754 MB's with cpu's as bargain bundles costing just above $100!

you could keep your agp card, but you need to get a 939 mobo with agp. there are no mobo with pcie and agp together.

with 350, you have enough for a cpu, a mobo and a low end pcie card that will still be better then your 9600.

my suggestion is an A64 3000+ (170)
a 939 mobo with pcie (70)
a sapphire GTO2 (200) unlockable to X850 XT speed

total 430 (slightly higher, but cmon you can save 80 bucks somewhere).

if you just dont want to spend that much, then get an X300 or X1300 for real cheap, and it will be the same performance as your 9600. the GTO2 will blow you away thou if you game. it will be a huge change from what you have now.

There is one such board, the Asrock 939Dual-SATA2. It's about $70 and a lot of people here have it. Although you could probably fit in a new, better video card into your budget anyway.

Just wait for a refurbished 939Dual-SATA2 deal to come back you can get it for $37-$40 (Newegg or Chiefvalue) and grab an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ for around $156 (Clubit). There you go, your $200 is well spent. The new 939Dual-SATA2 comes with some accessories below. I assumed you already have Floppy/ATA 133 cables and some good knowledge where to get the drivers for this board so you don't actually need them.
As far as I read 939Dual-SATA2 at AT, you can pretty much put everything from your old system on it. GL
- Quick Installation Guide, Support CD, I/O shield
- Floppy/ATA 133 cables
- 1 x SerialATA data cable
- 1 x SerialATA 1-to-1 power cable
