i bought my Epox 8K7A+ about 2-3 months ago, got Antec SX840, Swiftech MC370, IBM 60GXp 40Gb, and have been holding on for the best processor, and graphics card.
GOD ITS KILLING ME.

Shiznit!! Athlon XP smokes!!! Buying a Pentium 4 now doesn't make much sense to me ($225 for the XP vs $530 for the P4, not to mention the cost of RDRAM), however........

Unless AMD can ramp Athlon XP to 1.7-1.8GHz within the coming months, Northwood is gonna start bitch slappin'

Haven't gotten to benchy's. Glad to see he was able to unlock it using L1 bridges just like usual.

EDIT: Oh My! Look at those ICC scores with SSE enabled! Glad that's cleared up

After reading that article yesterday on the XP .... on Extreme Tech, from the GH Thread, I was highly disappointed ....

But, these are the type of benches I really expected to see.... I'm not sure if I'm getting a 1.53G yet or not..... but it looks really tempting....

Hmm, the XP didn't beat the P4 in everything, that's a bit disappointing.

The PR useage now seems to fall a lot closer to the Thunderbird performance levels then it does the P4 as AMD claimed, in some benches the 1800 is besting the 2GHZ P4 by ~20%:Q

<< These are the type of benches I really expected to see.... >>

Yeah exactley. I didn't even read Extreme Tech's because 1. The benchmarks but also because they (like many) still use AMD 760, when KT266A is noticeably faster (8KHA+'s numbers looked great!). Anyway, this does estabilsh AMD the clear leader right now, and despite the price increases, so what? For those looking for the fastest, pick up a 8KHA+ and a XP 1800+, but for those looking to save money, get the $60 cheaper 1700+. Really the best way to describe the 1700+ is that it is in the same situation that the 1.4 T-Bird was in. It lead in some stuff (1800+ aside), but the 2GHz took the lead in some. So the $190 1700+ will be the best value, but for those that have the cash, they'll get the 1800+ so AMD continues reign of the performance crown, the q is, will Northwood come in Nov. I hope so, it will skake things up again. Good work AMD, and thanks Anand for a great Article!

<< Hmm, the XP didn't beat the P4 in everything, that's a bit disappointing. >>

I disagree. The only thing that the 2GHz won in still was Q3A and we all know that's because of the hardware prefectch. Everything else, 1800+ won.

Good to see Intel getting its ass whooped by the competition after years of domination. This is good for us all, after the XP 1800's or even faster comes down in price I'll consider upgrading the ol'e Duron 850... I see no reason to upgrade unless you get at least double the speed but I'm after more...

Now perhaps Intel could slap a VTEC badge to make the riceboys think the P4 is much faster... they've already lowered it

I don't think so at all. Keep in mind folks we are really comparing a 2.0Ghz chip vs. a 1.53Ghz chip as well as a $550 chip vs. a $250 chip. I think AMD has done a mighty fine job. And anyone who tries to argue the value of buying a P4 2.0Ghz over an Athlon XP1800+ is just plain nuts.

I always knew there was something skewed with Sysmark 2001 (heavy SSE use). Now with SSE on the Athlon XP it blows the P4 away!

Most important sentence in the entire article for me (page 4):

While the current batch of Socket-A motherboards are not nearly as flawless (in regards to overall stability/quality) as the i845 boards we rounded up not too long ago, they are approaching maturity as time goes on.

Just for fun, I tallied up the benchmark wins for each processor:

Wins for AMD Athlon XP 1.53Ghz (1800+): 9
Wins for Intel Pentium 4 2.0Ghz: 4
The Athlon XP 1800+ and Pentium 4 2.0Ghz tied in 1 benchmark.

Just finished readin the article, it was pretty good. I would have liked to have seen "projected" results for TBirds at 1.5GHz,1.6GHz, 1.7GHz and 1.8GHz. Just to see how they compared to the XP's scores, it may have helped to put to rest what the PR ratings are based on.

"We understand what AMD is trying to accomplish with the rating system, but from our perspective, the Athlon XP is a strong enough product on its own to survive and excel without the use of such a system. There are much better ways to educate the masses. "

Amen. I think I'm going to print this article out and put on the bulletin board at work... theres lots of "more mhz is better" people there...

C'mon AMD PUH-LEEEZE drop the PR system!!! Maybe we should all email them...

People, it all comes down to marketing. Intel still kick's AMD's a$$ in this respect. There are a number of people out there who don't even know AMD exists! Take my father and cousin as examples!

Anand should've named the article, "AthlonXP: Intel gets its ass kicked."

LOL! That would've been funny! On the PR Rating. I think unltimately, it is gonna do more harm than good, so we'll see, but I wish if they're so for this, they would not be so conservative. Like the 1800+ should be 2000+, 1700+ should be 1900+, and so forth.

What a great performance. I'm wondering what kind of performance can we expect from Athlon XP 2.0GHz?
