Athlon XP Barton on unsupported board - how to fix multiplier?

Hey guys,

So I've paired this board with this CPU. Technically the board doesn't support it but it's electrically compatible as well as being a 266MHz FSB CPU. It boots and works fine (just ran through a full install of XP with it installed) but it's running at a 6x multiplier for 800MHz.

Is there any way you guys can think of that I can fix that?

custom BIOS? though there are only a few boards that could be fully tweaked with a flash...

This normally happens when the BIOS is reset.

did you go into the BIOS and change the multiplier and FSB to what it should be?

if all fails you could try the wire trick to set a multiplier which is lower than 16.5 but still higher than 6x

That looks nifty, thanks! I found cpumsr but it doesn't stick upon reboot.

No multiplier adjustments in the BIOS.

Yeah, that was gonna be my next stop.

What kind of wire is optimal?

I have never seen a KM266 board. I do have several KT333 boards and a KT400V board that is currently running an Athlon XP 2500+ and win98SE.

I had to check I am not reading a thread from 2005

You know that's the truth when this poster uses their 2nd post in 8 years on this thread.

I actually went back and looked a some old Anandtech reviews on this stuff, like my old Iwill motherboard.

Yeah, you just need a different motherboard.

http://download.msi.com/archive/mnu_exe/E6738v1.0.exe

Manual says there's a sort-of FSB setting (CPU Host/PCI Clock can be adjusted) but there don't appear to be any multiplier adjustments or other overclocking support.

A slightly newer motherboard (KT333 or KT400) that supported Barton CPUs and 333MHz FSBs out of the box would work. Or just a KT266/KT266A that you could manually set/overclock to the right speeds. It shouldn't be that hard to find one somewhere.

My favourite AXP board was the ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe. The final CPU I used in that board was a Barton 3200+.
