It's the latest version of the Durons (Morgan core) and the Athlon XP's they have a different "boot timing" to the older CPUs - which the older boards such as my KT7A (before rev. 1.3) etc etc do not support. Well not officially anyway!

Basically it would appear that most people can run the new Duron at 100FSB but are having problems getting a nice overclock using the 133FSB setting.

but do you think this boot timing will affect my project?
I'm want to fit the 133fsb athlon xp on my 100fsb abit kt7-raid (via kt133)

so will this boot timing problem affect me? do you think I'll be able to run it?
I'm running the latest bios version 64
what r u running on your kt7a?

Yeah I'm running the 64 BIOS also.

Assuming that the boot timing issue is only with the 133FSB (possibly only with the Duron?) then from my experience you should be fine.

The reason I decided to go for a Duron - besides the cost factor - was that if my motherboard would not boot with the new core CPU then the cost involved would not be too high.

At $54 shipped it was well worth the risk

Now I have a reasonable indication that an Athlon XP is quite likely to work on my system - even if it is only at the 100FSB setting

I'll probably be in the market for a new motherboard by the time I do my next CPU upgrade though. The Duron will see me through the rest of this year from what I can predict right now.

Actually - now that I have seen what u r upgrading from - same as me!

I'd actually suggest the Duron 1Ghz until the XP CPU's drop in price

If you PM me your e-mail adress I'll send you a screen shot of my Sisoft Sandra CPU benchmark. I'm sure you'll be quite impressed. It's a huge increase even from my old 700 benchmarked at 1000Mhz with 133FSB.

The difference is very significant from the old CPU - which could not be described as slow either - even using the 100FSB as opposed to the 133 with the 700Mhz CPU

OK I'll mail it to ya tonight when I get home - I'll see if I can find my original Duron 700 benches too

check here. Be a little more polite if you intend on emailing me instead of PM'ing. We are here to help and don't need the "hey buddy" attitude. Good luck on your upgrade, but you are taking quite a chance a XP will work on a mobo without hardware support for it.

you wrote to me:

hey buddy, you wrote this:
You won't get an XP to run on the KT7- pretty sure of that. check the mobo
forum

I'd like to know why you think it won't work?
did you read the whole thread, because I think all my info on why I think it
will work is posted..
but I need all info about why it might not work!! as I'm probably getting it
this week.

and also, what's this mobo forum you speak of? (-:

thanks

Yep - I've read that article too - hence my hesitation to purchase a full blown xp processor.

I have a feeling that the xp would work at the 100FSB though as Binox assumes also.

Assuming that the maximum manual setting for the KT7 might be a 12x multiplier (1320Mhz with 110FSB) or 1300 auto setting with the 64 BIOS I'd say it's not worth getting the xp CPU only to run it at that potential maximum speed if the CPU will not boot with the 133FSB.

I'm quite impressed with the 1200Mhz (Host Clock + PCI clock) setting and all memory tweaks in place.

........Especially for $54 shipped from newegg

juststarting: sorry 'friend' I really did not mean to insult/offend/ not be polite in any way. hey buddy was only a greeting.. or at least that's what it was supposed to be, so I'm sorry about the attitude )-:

and about the email / PMing thing, I don't even know what you're talking about PMing.. does it stand for post message? anyway, I emailed you, well, I figured why waste anandtech forums' space?

so anyway, sorry about everything dude..

and thanks for the advice.. I will take the risk tho, because it's not really a risk (-: my cousin will exchange his 1.4tbird for my 1.4xp if it doesn't work (-: so no risk!! heheh

but I hope it works (-:
and with the blue orb chipset hsf, it should be interesting (-:

my bday is thursday, so by the end of the week, we will know if the xp works on the kt133 (-:
can't wait!!!!!

PM is the little lock symbol in the upper right of every post. You need to go to your profile and enable it if you want to be able to PM via this forum. Not required- just nice to use.

good morning everybody!!
last night was a good night for me (-:
I got home, and my dad said I could go buy my own bday present last night, if I went get it myself!! ahhahahah

so I went, and I purchased the Athlon XP 1600+ with the Vantec 6027D hsf
and I already had the Thermaltake blueorb, which I've been modifying to fit my northbridge:
http://pages.prodigy.net/webvanguy/blorb/Page1_frm.html

so I got home, took apart my whole computer, installed the blue orb which was a little tricky.. but it worked.
of course I cleaned out all the dust so my computer is like new (-:
and I reinstalled everything with the xp & vantec..

and guess what? IT WORKED!!!!!!!

my computer booted up (2nd try don't know why) at 1050 no problem
bios describes my cpu as Athlon XP 1050mhz!! heheh

and everything seems fine, works stable, I watched a whole dvd at 1050 no prob..
but 1050 really sucks since it's a 1.4ghz!!
once I unlock the cpu, it will run at least at 1.2ghz (12x100)

so now I need anantech readers' help!! (-:
1st of all, what voltage should I be running at?
2nd, does anyone have any experience overclocking fsb on kt7 (kt133 chipset)?

because I didn't have much time last night, but didn't seem to boot up at 117
116 booted, but crashed

I'd like 116 to be able to reach 1.4 (12x116). I thought this might be possible with the blue orb )-:

but it might also be a voltage problem, I have no idea what voltage to run at..
right now I think I'm at 1.4v ... is that good?

I have no idea about the voltage for the XP series but I would assume you should be able to use a FSB of 105-110 realistically.

From my memory 116 to 117 is higher than the general high point of around 115 for the original KT133 Chipset.

Just slowy but surely increase your FSB and make sure all is stable before moving up to higher FSB's. I'd try to use 110 personally as a starter

My Duron runs at 1.75 Volts standard - but I am currently using 1.825 Volts for my 1.2Ghz overclock.

I forgot to tell you guys my system temps (-:
I don't know if this is of any importance to any of you, but I find them pretty good!!

before with my duron 700 o/c 950 @ 1.85volts with Chrom Orb, I was getting approx 44 C
system ~ 26 C

now with athlon xp 1600 underclocked to 1050 @ 1.4volts with Vantec 6027D, I'm getting ~ 27 C max 29 and my system temp is 26 (-: hahahah

but, this is a big underclock, and it really sucks for now )-:

anyway, I would also like to ask you guys if anybody knows how to set the bridges on the xp to change multiplier? because I'd like to boost it up to 13, or 14x since my bios setup only allows up to 12x )-:

if this would be possible, I might be able to actually overclock higher then 1.4ghz
otherwise at 12x, I'll remain underclocked somewhere between 1.3 and 1.4ghz, which is still good, but I'd rather have higher multiplier if possible...
thanks
