check out my rig: http://www.anandtech.com/mysystemrig.html?rigid=12938
now, I need a faster cpu!!

but I don't want to go through the hassle and expenses of upgrading motherboard...
plus, my birthday is coming up, so I can possibly (if I'm lucky) get a new cpu for my bday!!

I think if I unlock the athlon xp 1500+ (1.33ghz) and clock it to 12 x 111 (1.33ghz) it should work fine no?
I would like to have other anantech readers' opinions...

my max fsb is 12
and the maximum fsb I've reached was 112...
so it should work right?

i think any kt133 board that will run the new duron (morgan) will also run the new xp

but as you pointed out since all the new xp's are designed for a 133mhz fsb the new cpu will run underclocked on a 100mhz bus, unless you unlock and manually increase the multiplier

cool, so as long as my motherboard will support 12 x 111, I should be able to run my athlon xp at 1.33ghz!!

excellent, because I'm pretty sure I'll be getting this for my bday!! (-:

is anybody interested in knowing if it works if I get one?

Just look for an inexpensive SIS 735 based motherboard that supports SDRam. Unlocking an XP is not very easy!

NewEgg has the ECS K7S35 for around $65 shipped, just to give you an idea of the extra cost.

thanks rickr,
but I have the KT7-RAID, and I use my raid..
so I need a raid board..
also, unlocking the xp is a challenge for me, and I want to try (-:
plus, I want to experiment with this board, to see if it'll work!!
I think it would be nice to run my board at it's maximum possible speed (-:
but I hope it'll work.. cause or else it'll suck to be me )-:

Hey, I have an EPox 8KTA2 that has a jumper (jumper J14)for 133Mhz FSB. Would that be ok? and my RAM is 133Mhz also?

Thanks,

*bump* come on guys, I don't wanna spend $230 on an athlon that doesn't work on a KT133...would it be possible? I want some advice from tech concious people before I buy! (i have a T-bird 1Ghz (200mhz fsb) now).

I dont think any of the KT133 boards will run an xp processor. Some of them won`t even run a morgan/palomino core. My mobo maker (FIC) specifically says no XP support for my AZ11E, but will support morgan/palomino with a bios flash.

I dont think the issue is whether it can run it, but that the bios will not recognize it when it boots up.

good luck!

thanks gotey

so when you're saying that it'll run, but won't recognize it.. you're saying that it'll run on my kt7-raid at 12x111 if I unlock it.. except it won't display athlon xp, right? it'll say something like athlon 1.33ghz or something right? if so, I don't really care about this..

does it make any difference tho? it'll still be running with the new palomino core so it should run faster then a thunderbird, and also cooler right? cause those are the 2 reasons why I perfer xp over tb, because it's faster and cooler..

the reason no kt133 motherboard will ever claim support for the xp is cause none of the xp's are designed to run on a 100mhz fsb, and.... none of the kt133 mobo's can run 133mhz fsb (even though some kt133 boards may have overclocking options for a 133mhz fsb it still wont work) cause the kt133 chipset just isnt capable of running much higher then 110mhz

but... just cause they dont "support" it doesnt mean you cant get it to work, you will have to unlock the multiplier and boost it up to make up for the slower fsb

thank you Boonesmi

that's exactly what I thought..
my birthday is coming up soon (Jan.24) so I should be getting my Athlon XP..
then I'll clock it to 12 x 111 on my KT133 hopefully if all goes well.
I will keep posting results here as I know nobody else to brag to about my athlon xp unlocking success.. and overclocking of my KT133... nobody will understand!! heheh

I just thought of something that all of this activity made me remember..

My northbridge fan is full of dust and non-operational )-:
I have the Abit KT7-RAID, and I can no longer operate at 944MHz (8.5 x 111) which was possible before..
so if this doesn't work, then I won't be able to run my Athlon XP @ 1.33Ghz (12x111)..

basically, I need a new northbridge fan.
I know the blue orb isn't supposed to fit, it's too big.. cause I saw a site on the web that tried to fit the blue orb on the KT7, and it didn't work.
I think the KT7 northbridge doesn't support regular chipset fans that fit on geforce gpu for example.

anyway, does anybody know where I can get a good northbridge fan that will fit on my Abit KT7-RAID?

Measure the distance between the two holes for the northbridge heatsink/fan mount..most likely a vantec chipset cooler will fit, which you can find most places for like $15 shipped. If it doesn't fit, a Iwill northbridge fan will(only downside is, it's green, you can take the iwill sticker off) and it's a lot better than the vantec one, has a blue orb like design..you can get it for about $7.

another thing to remember... the asus a7v has remapped some of the multipliers with newer bios revisions

meaning if you use bios version 1007 or newer the dipswitch setting for 12.5x is actually 13x, and the setting for 5x has been remapped to 14x

update!!
piece of info:
ABIT KT7 / KT7-RAID / KT7A / KT7A-RAID V1.0/1.1/1.2 all use the same bios
ABIT KT7A / KT7A-RAID V1.3 have a newer bios

if a thunderbird 1.4ghz 266fsb will work in a kt7 (kt133) board @ 14x100
then I believe the athlon xp 1600 (1.4ghz) should run in a kt7 board @ 14x100

but this is a quote from abit's site:
1. ABIT KT7A / KT7A-RAID V1.0/1.1/1.2 mainboards were designed before AMD launched the new AthlonXP processors.
2. AMD new processor AthlonXP is slightly different from old Athlon and need a hardware modification. Without the modification, system may boot up flawlessly sometimes but fail to power on in some cases. It's the root cause why KT7A / KT7A-RAID V1.0/1.1/1.2 and KT7E mainboards cannot support AthlonXP processors.
3. ABIT KT7A / KT7A-RAID V1.3 had implemented the hardware modification to fulfill new CPU requirement and be able to support AthlonXP.
4. Other vendors' KT133/KT133A mainboards also differentiate the AthlonXP support from board version.

so I went on to check other kt133/kt133a vendors as the quote suggested, mainly Asus A7V133 because my cousin has one. And on their site, they say the A7V133 supports the XP, but I know this board was out way before the XP because my cousin has had one for quite a while, and if XP was out, he would have gotten the XP!!
what I don't understand, is abit is saying there's a 'hardware' modification required to make it work, so how come asus doesn't need this 'hardware' modification to make it work?
plus they go one saying it might work sometimes, and might not work some other times...
which I think is full of $hit!!!!! I think abit just doesn't want us to put XP's in their boards...

does anyone have something to say about this?? because if you read the whole thread, you'll understand that I'm planning on buying an XP for my KT7-RAID.. should I consider the tbird instead?

also, if you're curious about my chipset problem, I found this site:
http://pages.prodigy.net/webvanguy/blorb/Page1_frm.html
which is perfect for me, talks about how to install the blue orb on my exact board, the kt7 (-:
so this is what I will do for my chipset...

but now, if I do get the xp, and it works... what kind of heatsink should I get?
at local stores around montreal, this is what I could get:
-Thermaltake Dragon Orb 3
-Thermaltake Volcano 7
-Vantech Copper 6027D
-Vantech Copper 6035D
-Globalwin CAK-38
-Swiftech MC462A (too expensive)

or any suggested for online shopping would be nice too (-:

thanks a lot if you can help..

Well my KT7A v1.0 runs a duron 1000Mhz (@1200Mhz) without any trouble (so far!)

Presumably this will also apply to the Athlon XP's assuming they use the same core?

cool, so if you're right, then it should work in mine aswell because the kt7a pre-1.3 and kt7 use the same bioses (-:
so all I have to do is unlock it, and raise the multiplier...

does anyone know how I can get higher multiplier the 12x on kt7?
because I have up till 12x in softmenu III
and the I have a 12x and above option.. which I think is only good if I have a 1.4ghz 200fsb cd which is locked at 14x multiplier... is this possible?
would there be any other way to go higher?

I'm not sure how to get a multiplier above 12 either actually.

The only problem that I am running into though is being unable to run the CPU (Duron 1Ghz) with a 133FSB. This should not apply to your XP hopefully - perhaps this might be a symptom of the new "timing" that is required when initialising the boot sequence with the newer core AMD CPU's which is not officially supported with the older KT7A or KT7's

well I won't be reaching 133 for sure because of my kt133...
but you have kt133a, it's unusual that you can't reach 133mhz

maybe try lowering your multiplier, because maybe your cpu simply can't reach 1.33ghz (10x133), so maybe try 9.5x133 (1266) or 9 x 133 (1200)

me I can't run 133 for sure, so I'll be stuck at around 110 - 115
but I just got a blue orb for my chipset, so hopefully I'll get even higher then that (-:

I've tried 6x, 7.5,8x, etc, etc x133 - but no go - just refuses to boot - all lights come on and nothing else

The Sandra CPU benchmark at 1200Mhz (100FSB) is pretty decent though ;-) especially for a $54 CPU

that sucks tho, your motherboard supports the 133...
mine doesn't so it's not so bad..

maybe try raising the fsb ~ 110 and you'll get a little boost in performance over 100fsb.

The strange thing is that the board is fine - I ran my "old" Duron 700 @ 933Mhz in it and it was totally stable too.

The only thing that I cannot verify is the boot timing issue.

what's this boot timing issue thing?
is it cause you have a duron & not supposed to work @ 133?
