I wish I had XP-M I could not find one at computer expo 4 years ago but my XP 2400+ died 3 months ago for unknown reason. I wanted to keep it alive to give away to my friend but it is too late. No more Althon XP out there.

It really is too bad that one cannot buy an XP for the same price they were just a couple years ago. Now you'll have to pay around $100 for an athlon XP 2400+, instead of the palty $65 it used to be. The whole socket A market has gotten way too expensive. An 800 mhz Duron will still cost you $25. You can buy a Tualatin Celeron for cheaper now. Socket 754 is now AMD's bargain platform. The Bang for the buck ratio for 754 is very high.

Sadly though, the crown for cheapest platform now belongs to Intel's socket 478. Performance and overclocking aside, one can get a $50 Celeron D 310 and a $30 integrated-everything mobo, and a $20 stick of 256 mb ram for a $100 total computer upgrade. That bests the cheapest socket 754 system by $15-20. Spending $25 more on a decent 478 board would allow you to o'c the 310 to ~4 ghz, which should be a close match for an overclocked 754 sempron at the same price point.

I've got a 2600m 35w and a CRAPPY Gigabyte NF2-400 mobo sitting under me unused. Got to 2.4 at 1.7 vcore with a TT silent boost HS with a smart fan ghetto rigged on it (from my venus 12, stuck a 'nado on that when I de-lidded my clawhammer), which is pretty good, but the damn mobo needs hyper X to get to 200 FSB relibly.

My old 2500 xp-m is now sitting in my mom's pc running at 2.4ghz @1.7v. That thing served me well when it was in my main rig. Used to run it at 2.5ghz @ 1.9v with an all copper thermalright heatsink. I think that processor is going down in history as arguably the best price to performance ratio out of the box.

I'm using the rig in the sig right now. It's clocked the same as always. Still can game solid at 2.6 ghz whenever I want it to.

Have several HTPC's in use here.
All were mobiles running around 2100MHz, in NF2 with MCP-T (Soundstorm).
Have now upgraded most to Opty 144 and 146's, overclocked to 2700MHz or 3000MHz.
Not at all impressed with A64 performance compared to XP-M.

For gamers, CPU means little.
Going from a 2GHz XP-M to a 3GHz A64, may give you a 10% gaming performance boost.

Video card is what makes the difference.
Going from a $50 video card to a $100 video card can give you a 300% performance boost in games.

HDTV is why I made the move, and again, not trilled at all with the small gain in performance. Maybe 5% faster with Opteron.

Plus, going to Opteron means I had to give up good audio. Sure, HDA is O.K., but you still can not game over S/PDIF like you can with Soundstorm.

The real advantage to upgrading is video card choices.
Socket A is limited to AGP, while I can now run PCIe.
Still, high end AGP cards do perform great with most of todays games.

If I had to spend my own money, (I sell what I have after testing, so it's not my money really), I would keep XP-M, and wait until the next wave of motherboards and CPU's, hoping that they would finally give that WOW and smile after upgrading.

Sold my Mobile Barton 2600+ which did 2700Mhz 24/7 on this forum for $65.

Sold that so I could make room for my new Opteron 165 which does 50Mhz more. 2750Mhz, LOL.

I love upgrading!!!!

For gamers, CPU means little.

Depends on the game. Some games with the Unreal Engine (UT2004 etc) are all about CPU power as is the IL-2 series and several other game engines. In these particular games, review after review has shown that most mid-level cards 5900 ultra and up do about the same until you go over 4x/4x AA/AF. Sure, on some of he latest and greatest the trend has shifted to abusing vid-cards, but there are so many titles out there don't need more than a 5900 Ultra or 9800 XT to play just fine.

If I had to spend my own money, (I sell what I have after testing, so it's not my money really), I would keep XP-M, and wait until the next wave of motherboards and CPU's, hoping that they would finally give that WOW and smile after upgrading.

So true.... My newest rig was for my wife. I stick by this one. I might upgrade to a 6600 for giggles, but that's about it until the new generation mobo comes around, or the new game REQUIRE me to upgrade more than a 6600 upgrade could handle. So far, that isn't happening.

My 35W 2400 has been laying on the self collecting dust for about a year now.
I'm giving it a good home soon. I'm building a "freebie" PC for a family that's low on fundage.

Still running strong on my 2600+ mobile. Probbaly get a Duel core when the M2 platform comes out and becomes cheaper. Although an Opty 144/146 is not outta the question for me since they OC nicely.
