I think it's completely nuts that the prices for Athlon XP 3200's are more than many Athlon 64's.

I mean you can buy an Athlon 64 3200 Venice and a motherboard for what they want for just the XP version.

The 64 is going for $150ish and a decent mobo is another 80 or 90, plug in the RAM from your old system and you've got a much better upgrade path than just buying the socket A XP chip and better performance.

Supply and demand, right. Who, in their right mind, would ever "demand" an XP at twice the price of a 64?

I know they don't make XP's anymore, but does that justify paying double for something that isn't up to snuff performance-wise?

well, the thing is that retailers like newegg most likely wont sell them for less than it costs them to buy. there are people that WILL buy the xp3200+ just because they dont want to upgrade to an entirely new socket. as overpriced as it is now, there are people that buy it.

Maybe nobody, but you're neglecting the "supply" part. The don't make Athlon XP's anymore, and even when they did, the 3200+ was the highest model they made (as far as I can tell). This implies added rarity, and regardless there is always a price premium for the top of the line model in a series. By comparison, the 3200+ is essentially an entry-level Athlon64, and as such not only is there an abundant supply of it, but entry-level chips tend to sell at reduced prices to attract new users.

Yep, its just like the 1.4ghz 512kb penitum III tualatin. Way overpriced, even today, when its sucessor is about to be suceeded. There simply isnt many of them. Also the 1mb pentium PRO is a rip off for what it can do.

I agree, And loved my Asus Nforce2 with a xp2700+, then a Abit NF7-S 2.0 + xp2500-m. That is just how the market works.

You're tell'n me.
I almost bought a XP 3200+ back in Sept. It was going for $159 at ZZF. I'd just starting looking around and wasn't sure whether that was a good deal or not. Next thing I know ZZF starts boosting the price $10 a day. Now it's at $259. Should of guessed supplies would be running low. Decided to go with Socket 939 so I'm about to get a new mobo (Asrock) and proc ... just waiting for price to fall a few bucks.

I remember when PC133 went into shortage and the premium stuff went out of sight on price. About 6 months later the bottom fell out and within a year you could buy it for dirt cheap prices and we were left holding the bag on way over priced crap. DDR took over the market and PC133 was basically history in the performance market. Lessons hard learned... NOTHING is ALL THAT. In a year you wont even care about todays processors.

I hear you. I had a perfectly tuned and stable Shuttle AN35N \ XP1800 for my media-file box and wanted a faster chip for encoding. I ended up pulling a rock solid board and replacing it just to add more muscle. I would have much rather forked over a few bucks for another XP but the price point for an XP3200 was enough to push me to an A64 platform when I didn't need it - not for a file box. Now I have a perfect AN35N board on the shelf and a new Gigabyte for my server board. It works, but it pizzes me off that I ditched a perfectly good AN35N for the Gigabyte, not to mention reinstalling everything again.

They stopped making the socket 754 3700+. Imagine if the price continues to go up and the socket 939 3800+ and 4000+ single core continue to go down in price. Well, you could buy those socket 939 CPUs maybe for less!

Although I didn't like swapping out a perfectly good board I can say that the performance boost was worth it. I ended up with a Gigabyte K8NS and a Sempron 3400 and encoding is way fastger than before. I wanted cool and cheap and I got it, and it works much better than expected which sort of made up for the irritation of shelving a good board.

supply, demand. the only people buying obsolete chips are those that simply must use that as a replacement part. and as such they will pay more. its the same with intel chips. heck lots of p3 based chips were still costing prices way out of proportion with their performance when athlon xp/p4's were common.

Does anybody remember when the Radeon 9500 came out?

It was an AWESOME deal for the money, and it only took a little bit of tweaking to get near Radeon 9700 speeds out of it.
People started buying them like hotcakes. Then the businesses (in their infinite wisdom) said, "hey, these things are selling great! we should jack up the prices because we're greedy and consumers are stupid!"

What happened? Sales slumped off. Because the businessmen were lacking in computer knowledge. They didn?t realize that the 9500 was only desirable at a certain price point. It wasn?t an excellent card, just a really good deal. For the kind of cash they wanted, consumers could purchase much better hardware.

Of course, there were a few computer builders who didnt have all the facts. They assumed that if the price went up, somehow these things must have gotten more proccessing power. So they went ahead and bought the overpriced cards anyway.

Didn't buy a mobile 2500+ all summer for $115 (canadian)... now they're gone and I'm stuck with my 1800+ pally until I want to spend real money on something new.

Until maybe a year and a half ago, any 1ghz coppermine chips (esp the 100fsb ones) were still selling for way more than much faster XPs and P4s - the fastest chip for an obsolete platform always commands a premium, because for the buyer it means not having to reinstall anything.
