Athlon XP......

I just bought a 1.4 (1600) Athlon XP & tried to install it on my asus a7m 266 mobo. I was told that the asus mobo was would work with the cpu.
It did not boot I am shipping the cpu back hopeing to get a refund. Mabe it was a dud? Anyone know what may have caused this?

Well AMD will only send me another cpu....
That is the first & last time I will buy a retail cpu, back to OEM from now on.
The company's I buy from return alot easier then dealing with AMD themselves.

I wouldnt of got the cpu if I knew I would get stuck buying a new mobo.
I have seen post where ppl have this combo running fine?
Anyone out there with some idea's on how to get this to boot?

Try to install the CPU. Clear the CMOS b4 fire up.

havent cleared a cmos in years
can ya give me a brief refresh on how to do so.
bah i hate how hard it is to put on those heatsinks also , that makes it so sketchy to install.

look in your manaul but on my last asus it was just a common jumper.unplug computer move jumper to clear position for about 10 secs,replace to original location and fire it up.asus boards are usauly clearly marked so it probably could be found by just looking.good luck

1 - check what version of bios you have, I know asus has released an update to support athlon xp.

2 - I always test my new motherboard on some non-conductive material like cardboard or that foam material that some motherboards are packed in. I one put in the core components(ram, cpu, video card) just to see if the board will post and send a video signal.

a. if the motherboard is not powering up then it could be the power supply.
b. if the motherboard does power up(fans running) but doesn't post then check your ram, cpu, video card are seated properly.

Anyways, athlon xp(retail) are rarely DOA out of the box...I'd check and see if it works on another board before returning it.

I seen that to run the athlon XP, I need a PCB revision 1004 or better . I dont know where to find my PCB version # ?

I am running bios version 1002 I believe.

I have the bios & am ready flash it but im not sure how to do it correct.
I have flashed b4 , but it was on my abit mobo & it was different.

Can anyone give me a hint on how to flash the bios.

OK I flashed the bios & got the cpu to work
But not my unreal tourney is running all goofy
Everything else seems fine , but it looks like theres some AGP issues?

Have you tried re-installing your video drivers and the AMD AGP miniport drivers?

I have reinstalled the vid drivers with a couple different versions but same flashing cursor when I play unreal T.
I see my mouse cursor where my cross hair is?
I dont know what would be the best miniports to try , any links?
