athlon xp1?00...

i just bought an athlon xp1600/abit kt7a to replace my aging asus k7m/athlon classic 500@750 combo. mostly i did this cause i'm home for break and i'm bored.

anyway, my computer is recognizing my processor as a xp1500, not the xp1600 i paid for. i tried changing it in the bios but windows and the bootlog still say it's a 1500. i tried running a benchmark in sisoft and it has it at 1.3 ghz, underperforming an athlon 1.33 in their archive.

i'm relatively certain from reading the chip it's a 1600. the first line reads "AX1600DMT3C". here's a pic

any ideas??

In your bios, you need to set your FSB to 133, or just select XP1600 from the list.

Do you know if your motherboard has the latest bios? Check your FSB, if it's at 133 and your bios is current then there's somethin wrong with the chip.

Also check what revision board you have, some of the KT7's and KT7A's don't support XP's. Abit should have a list of the supported Rev's.

when i'm in the bios it recognizes it as an xp cpu and gives me a list of xp cpu's to select. it was originally on 1500+ so i changed it to 1600+. the boot log and windows still have it listed as a 1500 though. when i go back into the bios it still remembers my 1600 selection though.

it seems odd that i'm only getting 1.3 ghz and not 1.33 if it thinks it's a 1500 though. i'm guessing my bios version is okay since it lists the xp cpu options, but i dunno what could be going on beyond that.

okay... i just checked with sisoft and it has my memory and system bus going at 124 mhz. so if it was at 133 i would be getting 1.4 ghz i guess. i went back into my bios and it still has it selected for a 1600 on a 133 bus & 10.5 multiplier. so i suppose it could be the bios now but i'm dumbfounded by this whole thing now this really.

i also tried going to manual settings for the cpu and setting it to 10.5x133 but it didn't make any difference.

What's the date on your BIOS? Looks like the latest is 11/07/01. Also what REV is your board? Looks like Abit says only the 1.3's and later will support the Athlon XP.

Try resetting your bios, with the jumper. Remember to unplug your system when you do this. I had a couple KT7-RAID's that were a bit "funny" until I reset the bios, with the jumper.
