Ok hears my tale of woe, I just recently got an OEM XP 2000+ AGOIA and droped it into my system replacing my 1700+ I used artic silver 2 and I have a Alpha Pal 8045 so heat isnt the problem (it ran between 42 to 46 c) the wierd thing is as soon as I used a open gl application (screen saver game ect.) it would either freeze or give me a BSOD

So I flashed the latest bios to my MB (Asus AV266-e) thinking it might help and Ive changed nvidia drivers the problem persisted, So I put my old 1700+ in and everythings fine again

I just cant figure this out could my cpu be bad? I tried to return it but it does work (just not well) so I couldnt get a swap (It was Krex computers BTW) Am I outa luck here?

What brand/model of power supply are you using? When your video card kicks in on an OpenGL app, it's going to start using more electricity. Maybe you need something beefier?

Well, I did a Google search for "400W a1 electronics power supply" and the results seem to indicate they're not very good. I've recently seen "400W" power supplies with actual 3.3V + 5V combined capacities of only 180W, which is lower than many quality 300W units these days. I'm going out on a limb and guessing your power supply is not supplying enough power for the new CPU. If you want a suggested replacement, a 350W or 400W Sparkle Power, or an Antec TruePower 330, 380 or 430, or perhaps an Enermax 465-series would be ones I'd consider at this point. The 350W Sparkle Power is only around $42.

edit: guess it's worth mentioning that I did look up www.a1electronicsinc.com to try to find the claimed PSU specs, but they have no particulars, except for a note that their failure rate is under 3%.

edit #2: cool, found a place where you can also buy Antec's SL300, SL350 and SL400: MWave is stocking the SL's now. They're the baseline Antec units, and for a fairly loaded system like yours I would consider the 350 and 400 out of the SL's.

You know I'll give it a look this A-1 400 watt is loud anyway and this xp2000+ is useless to me as it stands right now it even now hangs when I try to start a program.

Well its back to the old 1700+ for me till I can resolve this

The power supply idea might be bang on.

In my Athlon rig, when i had my system all overclocked and running all my drives and such, the thing woud lock a little bit into a 3d game and i would have to hard reboot. i tried everything, eventually thought of the PSU and replaced it. it was fine ever since with NO other tweaking. very similar symptoms too!!

i think you might wanna pick up a new PS. like maybe a nice Antec 430W or something along those lines (I got the old style 400W and it's awesome)

ANTEC PS's kick @ss. they are better than Enermax.

Your OS might be confused by the cpu switch and disabling SSE. Not sure how you'd follow up on this tho... can you run your 1700+ at 2000+? Try to bump fsb or if you're adventurous unlock. If it runs, then try the 3d app. If you can get your 1700+ to 2000+, that'll tell you if the psu is the problem.

Jaybee is on the right track.

What i'd do is to lower the FSB to 100MHz with the XP2000+ so that it runs at 1250MHz. Then if the computer runs the programs that it can't run at default speed then it's 99.9% safe to say it's the power supply. You already know the FBS runs ok at 133 with the 1700+

Hmmmmm ok I'll try it (running the 2000+ at a lower fsb) I might still order a new psu irreguardless I only bought this A-1 Electronics 400w psu because I was completely going over from intel to amd and my 235wpsu wasnt going to cut it

I hope it's just the OS or psu if this 2000+ turns out to be a semi functional bad cpu I'm gonna be bummed !I was willing to eat a re-stock fee just to exchange it.

I'll never shop with Krex again and if I ever deal with anyone besides newegg it'll be a retail box cpu!

I got a feeling buy the time I figue this out my 15day waranty will be over [sigh] and I might be out over a $100
