Athlon64 3000 to C2D E6400

Hi

I currently have an aging Athlon 64 3000+ (socket 939) system. I've been having alot of FPS issues in "World of Warcraft" lately when in large raids. I've upgraded my video card and lowered settings in game to very little effect on performance in large raids, which leads me to believe its a CPU limitation. If that assumption is incorrect please let me know.

Anyways, I've done searches on here, Google and Ars Technica looking for some sort of comparison between the two CPU's, but its seemingly impossible I guess due the 3000+ being quite old now. So does anyone know how these 2 chips would compare at stock speeds in WoW? What if I OC'd the E6400 to 3.2GHz?

System specs:

Athlon 64 3000+
Asus A8N-E
2GB Generic RAM
eVGA GeForce 7900GS
X-fi Extreme Music.

The E6400 in pure CPU power is about 20% faster at the same clock. If you OC the 6400 to 3.2, it will wipe the floor with the 3000, as in almost twice the power of the A64@2 ghz. I don;t know if your problem is with CPU or GPOU, as I don;t know that game, and a 7900 GS either, but it does sound reasonable that cpu could be limiting.

Kutai, have you overclocked your 3000? If not, you can easily bump it up to, say, 2.25GHz. If this increase in clockspeed also increases your WoW performance, then I would say it verifies a CPU limitation. At that point, if you're happy with the new performance, you might not need to upgrade. If you're already overclocked, then it might be harder to verify you are CPU limited but if the new GPU didn't help, it still suggests it. A Core 2 wouldn't be a bad upgrade in any case because they're the best thing on the market right now, especially when against a single-core 3000+.

In Call of duty 2, at 1024 x 768. He is doing WOW, and it could be bandwidth problem (internet). Isn;t that game dependant on the internet ?

All MMORPGs have this problem. It's a genre wide limitation that happens regardless of the hardware used. There's so much information being sent back and forth.

Thanks for the input and the link to the CPU charts. Although I've heard that Tom's can be rather biased with things, maybe thats just a rumor?

cmdrdredd: While to a certain extent that might be true, I don't think its the case here. When I say performance drop, I mean going from 45-60FPS to 5-15FPS. Add to the fact that others in my guild don't see as big of a performance hit as me, there has to be something up with my system.

As for overclocking my 3000+, I havn't been able to get much out of it, ableit I am very inexperienced when it comes to overclocking. I'll give it another shot here soon.
