Who would have thought the day would come where a $490 AMD CPU was "cheap"?

What's the difference if you're in Cali or not? Isn't the price the same?

So you're against paying tax for the state you live in and use all of the benefits for? You know....you have to claim all those out of state purchases on your yearly taxes anway. Just because most people don't doesn't make it right.

I just don't understand the whole "tax kills this deal" thing. Tax away your state taxes and see how you like it.

I would rather have the tax charged by the retailer than have to deal with it at tax time with the "usage tax" (non-sale taxed out of state purchases where the purchased item will be used within the state of California). You are taxed anyways. Not declaring the correct usage tax significantly increases your chance of being audited as California requests purchase information from a number of major online retailers that do not charge tax.

The guy who posted that above has a point. Soon as the govt figures out all these folks getting around sales tax, they will just start forcing people to start collecting sales tax, or put a general tax on your internet connection. Regardless, sometime, soon, because idiots don't put down what they bought and pay their "use tax", bad things happen to everyone. GG guys

Instead of the kingston 128MB PC2100 ECC, you can get a 256MB PC3200 ECC for free.

Congress has already discussed the matter. They feel that imposing taxes on internet sales may hurt the new industry. So for the mean time, spend away (on the internet).

I once paid $700 for a Pentium 90 cpu (which was quite cheap at the time).

But I have to agree, I am not willing to pay $490 for a cpu today.

You are buying two processors cores. The fact that they are packaged in a single chip is a bonus.

Running an SMP system is no longer just for enthusiasts who need to buy expensive dual socket boards with ECC registered RAM. You can run an X2 on a variety of cheap sub-$100 motherboards with regular PC3200 DDR.

I bought another X2 4200+ yesterday from Monarch; they had a bunch of freebies and I chose a cheap NF4 mobo (with X2 support), added the $50 coupon (search some deal sites) and the total came to $440 shipped for a OEM X2 and a motherboard. Who needs to wait around for a $350 X2 3800+ when the 4200+ prices are already this low?

I'll add a good aftermarket heatsink and see how far I can take it with ClockGen (unfortunatly I think the freebie motherboard doesn't have many BIOS overclocking options).

Delaware seems to do just fine without a sales tax, as do many other states.

seriously 4 years ago, a mass marketed processor that price would have made me switch to another company preference

I've seen many cases of IRS audit, but not a one by state tax board.
Be sides, I'm already paying too much tax, but not getting or seeing enough benefit of it.
By the way, doesn't sales tax go to the county?
