AthlonXP Thoroughbred Temperature

I recently upgraded one of my computers from an AthlonXP 1700+ Thoroughbred B to an AthlonXP 2400+ Thoroughbred B processor. The 1700+ typically ran at about 42-44 degrees C under full load, but the 2400+ runs at 58-59 degrees C under load. I'm using the same heatsink (Speeze FalconRock), and I'm using Arctic Silver Ceramique thermal compound. I cleaned the heatsink and re-applied new thermal compound before installing the new processor, and I tried re-seating the heatsink. I'm 100% sure that the heatsink was not on backward, and I even tried a Thermaltake Volcano 7 heatsink and another motherboard with the same results. I noticed that the base of the heatsink gets extremely hot when the 2400+ is running, which it doesn't with my 2000+ Thoroughbred (using a Spire FalconRock II heatsink, which is identical to the Speeze FalconRock). The 2000+ runs at about 36-38 degrees C at full load.

Is it normal that the 2400+ is running so hot, or is my chip bad? I know that both of the motherboards in which I tried the 2400+ support the 2400+.

You need a better heatsink. The faster any processor runs, the hotter it gets. You could try improving your case airflow though, before buying a better hsf. 80mm case fans are cheaper than good heatsinks.

Thanks for your reply!

True, I would expect a faster processor to run hotter, but should I expect it to be that much hotter? 15 to 16 degrees C is a big difference.

I tested the 1700+ and 2000+ in the same mobo a while back, and they got exactly the same temperatures as far as I could tell. I've also heard of people using the same heatsink as I'm using to cool Barton 2500+ processors to about 45 degrees C at full load with only one case fan.

Could an overheating CPU like this be a symptom of a defective chip, or should this chip really generate this much more heat?

The voltage is approximately 1.65 volts on one of the boards; I'm sure it is 1.65 on the other, too. I checked here, and it seems that 1.65 is correct for my processor.

I remember that some batches of Tbred actually run much hotter than the previous ones. For example, my Xp2100 Tbred B was much cooler than this Tbred that I'm having now. The Xp1700 Ran hotter at a LOWER voltage than the Xp2100 and the Xp2100 yielded a lower oc speed than this Xp1700.

That might be the issue.

Interesting, I hadn't heard of this before. Is there a way I can tell which batch my processor is from?

Also, how much hotter did your 1700+ run than your 2100+, and what voltages were you using?

Tested at same voltage for both at the same speed, the xp1700 was 5-7 C hotter.
