cause they are idiots... it is actually GOOD to run the fan faster... it doesn't do harm, it does good. The only reason to lower the fan is to decrease the noise the card makes.

I'm guessing that they were trying to keep power usage and noise levels down.

if they were trying to keep power usage down, they should have shipped it with working powerplay (downclock on 2D)...
It is just a case of the rushitities... release too fast and you miss things like that.

Could a driver fix that? Or is it hardware only?

Accelero Twin Turbo.

Accelero S1 rev.2.

215 L x 138 W x 33 H mm

The TT is nearly 4cm less wide. Which is a god send for me.

You have to go with what's best for your system. I actually removed a 250mm fan from the side of my case to fit the S1 in, I figured the cooling from the S1 would compensate for that. The CPU is a little warmer, but not by much.

But either way, whichever you choose will keep the card running at nice temperatures.

So you can't lose.

I just got my 4850 and found it ran around 80C in Windows with the case side off and a nice ~65F breeze blowing in through the window. I could smell how hot it was and that was disconcerting.

The manual fan control does the trick, though; at 75% I was playing Oblivion (finally full quality, yay! ) at about 53C though it was rather loud. I dropped it to 50% back in Windows and it sat around 60C all night without being too loud.

Now to get a good automatic fan control profile set up...

Quick question about the arctic cooling s1 rev 2. Does the kit come with ram sinks? Should i buy some from zalman?

I would. Apparently the thermal tape on the S1 ramsninks aint so good.

I'm having good results using Zalman ramsinks on this card, on all points that needed them.

Odd. Went to change the settings in my profile & my "ACE" folder is empty.
Where'd it go? hehe

Amazing!!! My temps dropped about 10 degrees C just by cleaning up factory thermal paste(I have the Visiontek card) and applying my own ( Zerotherm ).

they released a bios fix, every new part will have the fixed bios, and MSI released the fixed bios to the public, meaning you can download it and apply it to any stock design card (MSI, VisionTek, His, etc).

I don't know about a driver being able to do this as well... maybe, probably not.

Finally got around to installing an S1 on my 4850. Overclocked to 700MHz (the max CCC currently allows, can't wait to try and mess with options to push it further, as I'm sure the chip is capable of much more) and 1100MHz on the ram, with a 120mm S-Flex temps hover around 30-32C idle and 38-40C load.

Run the tool, select the bios file, click program, windows WILL COMPLETELY FREEZE! nothing will move, even caps lock will not work! this will go on for about a minute, don't touch anything and wait. After a minute things will start moving again and a message "bios was flashed successfully" will pop up, asking you to restart, click yes.

2.0.0.4 works fine and doesnt have any problems in windows. just dont use it on a 4870

2.0.1.2

* Fix Vista to work on all Motherboards

2.0.1.1

* Fix hangs with R680 on some systems

2.0.1.0

* Add Progress Bar while flashing BIOS
* Display Marketing Name when Driver is not installed in the system. It can import the device ID, marketing name information on the external file "atiref.dat"
The file will include the Asic name, device ID, marketing name and sub system device ID.
here is the sample of the file entry:
RV630, 0x9100, ATI Radeon x5000, 0x1234
* It will display the final flash result on the same dialog box if there is more than 1 card, it will only ask user to reboot the system when all flash are done.

2.0.0.9

* fix pa check parameters

2.0.0.8

* Add RV770 support

2.0.0.7

* fixed pak option to have popup error when infile is missing
* add option (excl_memtrain_dtable) to keep memory training information while flashing new bios
* add partial check for -pavbpn
* fixed part number display on screen

2.0.0.6

* update help menu

2.0.0.5

* add quite mode for saving Rom & display error message when error during saving/flashing bios.

2.0.1.2 is newer, fixes bugs, and doesnt have any problems either.. The computer not responding while flashing is normal, interestingly enough, while appeared frozen while flashing my vision tek with the MSI bios, flashing it a second time with a modified bios (for increase fan speed) showed a progress bar for the entirety of the operation.

But despite windows seeming frozen, it worked, it just took a minute and then the computer started responding again and a message popped up saying flashing was successful.

I just finally figured out the ultimate fix, or at least for me it's ideal becasue I wanted automatic fan speed control.

Use RBE to mod the MSI bios for fan speeds. (You could change core and mem speeds too, but I left them alone for now.)

RBE

MSI bios

Winflash

1. Start RBE and load the MSI bios.

2. On the Fan Settings tab in RBE look for the "Set all fan settings to recommended values" button. Click it. It changes the entire fan speed graph.
The stock settings are zero fan speed until the core hits 60 C and then it starts to ramp up.
With the recommended values it starts at 15% at 0 C and stays there until 40 C. then it ramps up nicely. For example at 67 C the fan is at 50%.

3. You also need to change the Hysterisis % to 0 or the fan ramps up and stays essentially stuck too high. The Hysteresis is the smallest % jump the fan will make, and after hitting "Set all fan settings to recommended values" it goes to 24 for some strange reason. As I said, just change it to 0.

4. Save the now modified bios.

5. Flash the card with Winflash.

6. Reboot.

7. Enjoy automatic fan speeds that make sense and keep temps in check without too much noise.

Right now my card is idling at 160/500 at 55 C and 34% fan speed. This is with the stock cooler. ATI should have done this from the start.

that is what i did PG. it is still too hot for comfort. idling at 55c and getting as high as 80c on load.
But it is much better then before, and it is a fix that is "in the card" itself.

Has anyone flashed this to an ASUS 4850 card? When I try to flash my card using the above recommendations i get the following error:

SubsystemsIDs mismatch

Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Also, could I load the Asus bios file into the RBE editor and modify it to match the MSI bios without causing any problems? (http://www.techpowerup.com/vga...D4850.512.080523.html)

Sorry for the noob questions, just dont want to brick my card. Thanks!

I thought that Asus cards came with software that could change fan speeds. I would use that instead of messing with the bios.

You could try loading the MSI bios into RBE and then selecting "ASUS" from the manufacturer code list.

Also, you can just read the current bios, load it into RBE, modify the fan speeds there, and then load it back up. It would not fix the downclocking, but it should fix the temps.

Can't you use RBE with the stock BIOS (e.g. VIsiontek if you have one) to enable
the fan speed to ramp up faster, and possibly change the low speed 2D mode to correctly
activate PowerPlay at 160MHz and all the other such improvements as the MSI BIOS has?

Are the only improvements in the MSI BIOS in these voltage/frequency/termperature/fan speed control tables? If so, why are you using the MSI BIOS as a RBE input vs. your stock BIOS? Though I certainly understand that the MSI BIOS is (predictably) reputed to work well with the BBA reference design Visionteks and other such cards, it seems preferable to leave a mostly stock OEM BIOS on the card.

The RBE changes some common values like voltages or fan speeds, it cannot go in and apply patches to faulty code that prevents features from working.
So no, you can't use it to enable powerplay if it isn't working (a bug, not a disabled feature).
