Because some of us are still not comfortable with idle temps of 50c. Plus, I want a quiet PC, not something that sounds like it's about to take off.
The stock fan will likely do for most people's needs, but it is a piece of shit. It isn't copper, it's aluminium painted in copper paint. No wonder it got hot.
For just a few bucks extra and a bit of time, I'd much rather know that the card is cool, even when I clock it to 700Mhz.
Just my $0.02.
Copper painted aluminum? Source?
Source? What I saw when I took off the cooler, namely
this.
You can clearly see the grey coloured surfaces around where the holes are, the copper colour appears to be a copper 'layer', albeit a very thin one. You can also scratch off the paint to reveal the grey surface.
Which kinda begs the question, why paint something in a copper coloured paint if it's made of copper?
It still doesn't really matter, aluminium heatsinks also do the job. And I certainly aint bashing ATI, I love 'em.
I just believe their heatsink is by design, fully intentional so that most can't unlock the core's potential. Because with a slight volt mod, this should easily go over 750Mhz, given that it's the same chip as the 4870.
And I'm sure almost all of the chips on the market will be fine with the stock cooler.
Me, I wanna overclock it to +800Mhz. It can't fry if it has 4870 voltage going through it, it's the same chip. It also can't fry if it's loading at 41c, which it is now @ 700Mhz stable. These 4850 chips have a lot of potential.
