Hey folks, I've been trying the ATI CCC profiles tweak to boost my fan speed to 35%, but no matter what I try it just isn't working. Every time I open my profiles.xml file (which by default looks like the text below), edit it as suggested in the posts above, and reload my profile, nothing changes. When I re-open the xml file, it looks like it originally did before I edited it. Any ideas?

<Groups />
</Caste>
</Profile>

BTW, I'm using WinXP. I have the Visiontek HD4850 using the MSI BIOS and hotfix ATI drivers/CCC, with Overdrive enabled.

Right-clicking on the file should give you the edit command, scroll to the very bottom of the file edit the last and second to last command line. They should look like this:

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="55" />
</Feature>
</Group>
</Groups>

Close file, it will prompt you to save file, save file, re-boot and you are done!

I just set mine to 55, re-open file to see that it saved if you like, but you must re-boot before it takes affect. I like this method as it's cools it to reasonable temps and doesn't void anything!

Do you mean restart the whole computer? Because all he needs to do is save then "activate" the profile again in the CCC. Thats how I did it to find the settings I want.

What's this about hacksaw? I don;t want to get it if it will require any modding beyond the fitting. Can someone confirm or deny whether I'll need to do any hacksawing fitting the Accelero S1 to a 4870?

the hacksaw is purely optional. i was copying another poster's excellent suggestion when i did my install and didn't think about the alternative until i was done.

Yes sir that's what I mean, I poked around the CCC a bit but didn't see what profiles where available, care to enlighten?

I'm trying to figure out whether I have space for the 4870 + Accelero + a 140mm fan attached to it.

Below my 8800 GTS I currently have about an inch+ space before the next component. I think that should be enough for the accelero and a fan strapped to it. However, from the edge of my GPU, to my side case fan, I have but a few mm, maybe a centimetre or two. Is the 4870/accelero much wider than the 8800 GTS?

This might give you an idea, it shows how far away it all is from the side of my case, the dimensions of which can be found here. I had to remove the huge fan in the side to fit the cooler, that fan didn't seem to make much difference anyway.

Maybe this helps you. Mine's an HD4850, but it's pretty similar in size to an HD4870.

At the top of the CCC, there will be a Profile Icon (In advance view, not sure about standard). Click Profile->activate Profile->profile name

I do believe you have to create a profile first....in the profile manager drop down in the profile button.

After you've created one, then you can edit it as mentioned before to achieve the fan control.

fastman,

Thanks for the reply, but when I open the XML file for editing, all I see is what I posted above. The entire file is only 6 lines long! Do you have any idea what might cause this?

When I add the lines from the guru3d post (and of course save the file), they disappear as soon as I reload (or activate) the profile in CCC.

Thanks again for your help!

Ahh now I see!!! I'm guessing because you?re using a MSI BIOS on A Visiontek HD4850 that's the difference? Other than that it should look like mine I assume, maybe someone who has flashed there's also can chime in? Can you flash back?

Yes, since I'm using WinXP, I'm looking in the location you mentioned. (In place of <USER>, it's "All Users", which I find a bit odd. I would have expected it to be under my user name.)

Thanks!

That is likely the problem, were you unable to find the file in your user's directory structure?

No, the file (Prifles.xml) did not appear under my own user name. It was only found in the "All Users" directory structure.

Try creating a custom profile (just go into the profile manager and save one, name it whatever you like) and then check for that filename.xml under your username's directory tree, it should appear, if you are logged in as that username.

You don't have to re-activate custom profiles each time the system boots, CCC will automatically do this when it loads on startup.

Yep, that's what I did. I created and activated a custom profile after enabling Overdrive, and I named the profile "Optimized", but the file (Profiles.XML) shows up under "All Users" with minimum content as mentioned above. Note that since I'm using Windows XP, the file should be named Profiles.XML, so I don't think that is the issue.

Thanks for the help!

The file should be named "Optimized.xml" in the folder under your user's tree, the 'Profiles.xml' is the default profile, which isn't used after creating a custom one. The filename is simply whatever you named the custom profile .xml

Twigger,

I am using XP as well and faced a similar issue. In my case, the xml file turned out to be under one of the user's directory, not "All Users". I ended up searching for the file through the Search function (you can access through the Start menu). be sure to turn on the search option for hidden files and folders. Once you find the file, you can edit with the notepad.

I spent only one minute editing the file, and a whole lot more time searching for it. now my idle temp is down to 53 degrees!

good luck

Thanks all. I'll give it another shot when I get home. I only have three user folders (mine, All Users, and Default User), and I searched them all but only found the xml file in the "All Users\Application Data\ATI..." folder. ("Show hidden files and folders" is enabled in my Explorer options.)

Maybe I'll just uninstall and reinstall the drivers and CCC. Now that I think about it, when installing the "hotfix" ATI drivers, I got an error message saying that I needed to install .NET 1.1 (or was it 2.0?) before CCC would work. So I installed .NET and everything seemed to work. Maybe a reinstall would be a good idea.

Thanks again!

Well I finally took the plunged and tried the MSI bios plus tweak the BIOS fan level thingie.
So far, I like the 160mhz idle, saves electricity. I also used Radeon Bios Editor change the fan profile in Bios, I have it pegged at 30% form 0-65C, then scales up from there. Temp is a bit lower overall. Once temp hits 90C, fan is spinning at 70% which is noticable. I think i'll just keep this Bios.

The xml tweak is nice too, but I wanted something more permanent.

OR you could NOT recommend that members of the AT forums perpetrate fraud against legitimate businesses. besides, it is possible to blind flash a card, you just have to know what you're doing. If you're NOT comfortable doing a blind flash or otherwise fixing a bad flash, then DO NOT flash your bios under any circumstances.

If taking advantage of a 30 day, no questions asked money-back guarantee policy is a hellworthy trespass, then I guess we're all headed there. How can I defraud them when they say they'll take it back for any reason?

Because returning an item that failed while you tried to fix it because it was sold to you with a defect is definitely a sin... It is not in any way shape or form their fault that the item was released with bugs, and it is entirely your fault that the fix broke it, and returning it for your promised refund is gonna make you burn in hell forever!
