2x 4870 only recommends 600watt so the 4870x2 should be the same or less. It should run fine on my Corsair 650 ( 52A 12v ) powersupply. Can't wait for the release.

Are you sure about it running fine on your HX620? Your motherboard, hard drives, fans, USB devices all use electricity too. We have the same PS and it's excellent, but I don't think it would be a good idea to run a 4870X2 or 4870 Xfire on it. If it did "run fine" you'd probably be right at the PS's limit.

With the rig in my sig, I most definitely cannot run a 4870X2. I'd have to make the jump to a 1Kw PS...no point in moving up "only" to 850 watts.
I hope so. Also, I have the 650watt model with the single 12v rail. I read in a review they got it up to 780watts before it shutdown, so it should be high quality. I only have 3 fans, 1 HDD, and a Burner. I checked the eXtreme PSU calculator online and it says 505watts / 77% with 2 4870. I expect the 4870x2 should take less power than 2 seperate cards. Even if I add another HDD it would only be 529watts / 81% which should be fine also. Your right it's really close, but I think it should be alright as long as I don't add more fans and stuff. Granted I have enough stuff not going in this pc, but this machine I'm keeping light.

EDIT

HardOCP ran R700 on the following specs and only were using 468w wall / 375w out. Even the Crossfire R700 was only 686w wall / 549w out.

QX9770
2GB Corsair RAM
3 WD Raptor
DVD/CDRom
Koolance Exos water cooling system

You're right; you don't have a lot of components in that system, so you should be fine. Good to see that you intelligently thought it all out!

Your mention of the eXtreme Power Supply Calculator got me curious, so I went and checked it out myself. I must admit they have come a LONG way with that thing!! They actually had all my components listed in their drop-down menus! I was shocked. :Q

Interestingly, for the rig in my sig (and adding in my USB devices) they recommend a 579 watt PS. That would be, what, about 85% of what my HX620 is capable of? Funny thing is that the fan in it never spins up. I mean it spins so slowly that I can ALMOST make out the "Corsair" sticker on it. I wonder how accurate that calculator is?

For grins, I changed the video card to two HD4870s and it recommends a 785 watt PS. Only 206 watts more than now. I figured two HD4870s would draw more than 206 watts more than a single 8800GT.

I think that pages gives room for error. Im my last post ( which I had edit ) HardOCP was only using 468w wall / 375 watts out with their system.

I got opteron144 and it says 142watts by itself with the overclock, wth. NO way thats right. It recommends a 697watt psu. I only got 620hx right now.. BOOOOooo

It should be fine. Here's Legit Review test setup. Anyone notice the power supply they used.

Core 2 Extreme QX9770
Gigabyte X38-DQ6
4GB Corsair PC2-9136C5
Western Digital SATA RaptorX
Corsair Nautilus 500

** Corsair HX620W **

423w Wall / 339w DC out

Minimum recommended power supply (according to Tom's slides) is 650watts. I would think quality 600watt PSU might be enough as well.

that is a lot of watts to take from the wall... i am thinking a 700 or 750 watt PSU would be the min for that card.

Are you banking on 50% efficiency or what?

This confirms micro-stutter is not gone:

http://www.pcghx.com/aid,65353...0_X2_reviewed/&page=10

The reports about the disappearance of the problem that have been published might be caused by the impressive overall performance of the HD 4870 X2. microstuttering is, depending on the individual characteristics, noticed at about 40 fps - but not by everyone. To force the X2 into such situations you have to use a resolution of at least 1,920 x 1,200 and activate 8x FSAA. 24x edge detect CFAA is another way to get the card to her knees.
At last, a competent website that understands the micro-stutter paradigm and how to test for it. This is exactly what I've been saying all along.

I suspected as much. It was never going to be that easy to fix the problem given that the card is still running on AFR like every other multi GPU setup.

Look at the min fps on that review, for anyone complaining that dual cards dont raise the min fps, the 4870X2 destroys everything in that department

Actually the "efficiency" rating of the PSU has the opposite factor here. A 50% efficient PSU Would waste half the power it draws. So drawing 500 watt at the wall means its only providing 250 watts to the PC, which would be a specific percent of what it is rated for. Ofcourse, a 50% efficient PSU will be utter crap so it will be able to provide even a smaller percentage of its rated capacity.
Firstly companies flat out LIE on these, then there is the "peak power draw" instead of "sustained power draw without frying"... Quality sellers use the sustained figure, crap ones use peak.

Also, no PSU can provide the figure it is rated for, firstly the figure is if ALL the various voltage rails are maxed out, bur realistically your system will be overburdened on one area, like the V12 rail for example. Depending on your components. It is impossible to have components take EXACTLY the amount of power your PSU can push on the 3v, 5v, and 12v rails1 and 2 (and even 3 and 4) all at once and perfectly balanced.
