those are bunk. no way is 4870 going to be 30% faster than 9800gx2. If it's 1% faster than 3870x2 and 8800 ultra then I'll be impressed. I hope that it is b/c it will at least be able to exert some price pressure on gt200 then...so we can all get the good stuff at a better price than in nov 06!

edit: more news on rv770 http://www.nordichardware.com/news,7700.html

if they really drag out 4870 until july that will be more bad news for daamit.

I heard they were gonna release the GDDR5 cards in July to help higher bin the 4870s GDDR5s over the 4870 GDDR3s. The longer they have between releases, the more time they have to weed out the good overclockers, and label those as 4870s GDDR5s You can pretty much kiss away having the cheap GDDR3 version of the 4870 be overclocked to compare with the GDDR5 version. Maybe the GDDR3 version will be released as the HD4850.

yes, but memory frequency isn't nearly as effective at increasing performance as core, at least on a 3870. I'll be interested to see how the uber-high memory clocks scale.

gddr5 will definitely give 4870 more room to push its fillrate. Particularly with AA and higher resolutions.

After having heard Cevat and Reigns pound PC gaming, I think this next gen of cards will be my last...
IMO Only if Battlefield 3 (not bad company) is great will PC gaming be saved...

anything that fuad writes is complete guesswork. I'm surprised that he knows how to spell "amd". A couple weeks ago he thought that jen-hsun huang's first name was actually "jensen".

btw, everything that he wrote there has been discussed at length here and at many other sites over the past couple months.

Pretty sure Jen-Hsun can be written as Jensen as that's how it's pronounced.

Um...that isn't exactly the way it works.

I'm looking forward to seeing how these perform. On paper this looks like it's going to be great. Of course if it is, at least it will put a little flame under Nvidia for a bit so we can get something even faster from them (with better drives hopefully). Gotta love how competition drives technology advances faster with great benefits for we consumers

They Say "The new GPUs are 55nm and they are actually an architecture shrink chip with minor architectural changes. " But i was thinking that RV770 had split shader and core clock so that was a huge architectural change??? WTF

Fuad doesn't say anything informative here, not to mention he's wrong. Ati is already using 55nm, so it's not a shrink. And "minor architecture changes" is synonymous to "I don't know what the changes are, so I'll just spit out a vague blanket statement which can later be twisted to mean anything."

Well, all the debate aside...if they enter the market at a reasonable price-point, next to existing tech, and there's a solution somewhere north of the gtx for less than gx2 pricing, I'm going to go ahead and hop on it.

I prefer ATI's approach over nVidia's for several reasons.
  1. Most of the recent intel chips have Crossfire enabled already, enabling me to stay away from nVidia's hit-or-miss, high-priced mobo solutions at the same time it saved me a few bucks.
  1. Built-in support for multiple monitors in Crossfire, vs having to disable SLI or only run one monitor with nVidia
  1. ATI is paying attention to the thermal envelope and power dynamics of it's boards this go-round, while nVidia looks to be going bigger/hotter/faster this time, on what is rapidly becoming an out-dated 65nm process. I prefer ATI's approach. (Using GDDR5 to save power and open up some bottlenecks was very slick, imo.)

And, last but not least, I have no intention of waiting more than another 6 weeks to purchase! We all know you can't spend forever waiting on the next, newest tech to come around. Sometimes ya gotta make a stand. If the GT200s aren't out in a month or so, they won't even be on my radar, no matter how much the rumor mill tells me to wait because "zomg they'll so be uber!!...once you water-cool then, mod your case, and buy a new PSU!!!".

Now will the mid range cards be better than the older 7800s/7900s of yesterday? The 8600GT/HD2600XT were considered to beat them out until they were released and showed that the old cards were better most of the time.

Also, will the midrange cards be released around the same time? I might pick one of these up since I get a paycheck in two weeks. The only thing I hope is the come out with a VIVO version so I dont have to get a Tuner card as well since my 7800GTX is a VIVO edition.

Quite a few Asian people pick nicknames in order to simplify pronunciations for Americans. I'm fairly certain that Jensen is an accepted spelling of Mr. Huang's first ("nick")name.

I mean, Romanization of Asian languages is not always on point, so citing Fud being unreliable for calling the CEO of Nvidia by an acceptable nickname is not the greatest point of attack.

The 9600GT/HD 3850 are already out at midrange prices and beat any 7800/7900 series card.

Please provide me a link showing that jen-hsun's nickname is jensen. Sorry, a link other than from fuad. You know what, it doesn't even matter. When was the last time fuad wrote something reasonably intelligent, 11th grade english class? His guesswork and ramblings are embarrassing to the tech community, and your defense of him is laughable.

don't go edit the wikis either, since I just read them. Quite a few jen-hsun's, no jensen's. hmmm...maybe fuad didn't write Mr. Huang's wikipedia entry...

Does anyone know how much power it'll take? I'm wondering if a 500w PSU would work with a quadcore cpu.

That could be real or it might not.
Thanks for making the situation clearer for all of us.

If they haven't addressed the AA issue then all the memory bandwidth in the world won't help them. Case and point: the 2900 XT.

It?s clear their move to GDDR5 is mainly to reduce cost, thermals, and die complexity compared to moving to 512 bits which is probably still overkill anyway, even with the alleged core improvements.

Uhm... read the wiki that you linked. Jen-Hsun "Jensen" Huang.
Also, probably has more credit than a wiki article:
http://www.worldview.com/success/suc_nvidia.html

PS: I don't believe a lot (any?) of the crap Fud writes. I'm not even "defending" him. I just think picking on his name choice as means to devalue his writings is one of the worst examples you could come up with

On another note, we should see the RV770Pro this month right??

Yep, although the RV770XT isn't due out until July Can someone explain what exactly is up with GDDR3 and GDDR5 cards? Are there going to be both GDDR3 and GDDR5 HD4870s? Or is the GDDR3 only going to be HD4850? I know for sure ATI is releasing both GDDR3 and GDDR5 cards, I'm just not sure which models are getting which. And is the RV770Pro gonna be the HD4850, or the HD4870? R770XT gonna be the HD4870x2? or the GDDR5 version of the HD4870?

yeah, don't know how I missed that wiki article. I THOUGHT that I read every single word, too...however, I'll still ask rollo just to double check. this is just the sort of stupid crap that fuad would do. He might have even been the one to change the wiki in the first place, he didn't have "jensen" in his name until feb 8, 2008. in fact, rollo, I know you're reading this, why don't you weigh in with your opinion.

that is just another rumor. I've seen/heard rumors about may, june, and july for rv770, for just rv770pro, just rv770xt, etc. rv770 pro is going to be 4850 and rv770xt will be 4870, that much appears to be very likely. They could still throw us for a loop of course, I remember looking forward to buying my "2950xt" for 45 days or so before getting the switcheroozie right at the end. re: the gddr3/5 thing, I've heard that they'll have gddr3 only for 4850 and both gddr3 & 5 for 4870. 4870x2 is going to be its own class of card, codenamed r700. Current rumor on it is that it won't be released at the same time as the others.
