They could still throw us for a loop of course, I remember looking forward to buying my "2950xt" for 45 days or so before getting the switcheroozie right at the end. re: the gddr3/5 thing, I've heard that they'll have gddr3 only for 4850 and both gddr3 & 5 for 4870. 4870x2 is going to be its own class of card, codenamed r700. Current rumor on it is that it won't be released at the same time as the others.

Thanks for clarifying. So the dual-GPU card is gonna be an R700 while the single-GPU ones are R770? Now ATI is screwing up the naming scheme as well...

That's the way it has always been.... RV6xx are midrange, Rx00 is high end. R680 = 2x RV670. R700 = 2x RV770.

Maybe for YOU but my PC is responsible for between 1/4 and 1/2 my power usage.

RV770 to be 1.5 times faster than RV670

Maybe a bit more

We've learned that ATI's new chip might end up 1.5 to 1.6 times faster than the current RV670 solution.

In the real world, this should mean that if one game gives 50FPS with RV670 that the new chip should be able to get you around 75FPS at the same settings. On average, the new chip will have to be at least 30 percent faster than the old one to make you even consider it but at least specification wise there is not anything that you might miss.

RV670 was a shrinked and better speced version of R600 with 512bit memory controller crippled to 256bit and it looks that R770 will get that memory upped to 512bit again. At least we know it will end up being fast but we still don?t know what's Nvidia?s real answer to this one.

JPB : I was just about to post the link...!! Oh well

Anyway, does the RV770 split the core clock from the shader clock??? "Like Nvidia or do they stay core+shader combo clock like it is with rv670???"

Based on rumors yes, the shaders will be clocked a bit higher than the core.

fuad is a genius...I know, let's go 512 bit AND use gddr5 so that the new card will be better in games that come out in 2027...genius, and fuad's the one who came up with it!!!

Am thinking the 512 bit and GDDR5 might be in anticipation of R700 (2 cores with shared memory)

There will be GDDR5 on the R770, however the 512-bit rumor may indeed be from the R700 cards, which will be the HD4870x2. It would make sense because each GPU will be 256-bit, and knowing how the marketing teams like to label things, they'll say its "512-bit" then in fine print "2x256-bit"

I was thinking the extra memory was for better AA performance but then again 2900 XT had the AA problem...

They need to expedite the release of their 4k series, my economic stimulus check will be deposited this friday and I don't exactly want it burning a hole in my accounts for too long.

yeah, it would be a "crime against humanity" if you settled for a 9800gtx with rv770 just around the corner...maybe you could help harold and kumar escape from guantanamo bay after you get incarcerated...

I know you are very pro Nvidia, and though I won't hold that against you, buying any new card now would be foolish with the new cards so close to release.

1. I'm not pro nvidia. I bought a 3870 in part b/c I thought that amd would offer better driver support than nvidia in the long-run (as already evidenced by the 9xxx series getting drivers sooner than 8xxx), but also b/c I figured that with a comparable price/performance ratio at the time I'd rather support amd. On top of that, I liked the 3870's dual slot cooling solution that is far superior to most 8800gt's in both noise and ability to vent exhaust out of the case.

2. I was being semi-serious: I think that getting a 9800gtx now is a big mistake. I do think that nvidia currently has a better price/performance ratio across the board RIGHT NOW, however, starting with 8800gs~100AR, then going to 9600 gt ~ 110 ar, 8800gt ~155 AR, and 8800gts ~195 AR. I just think that 3850/3870 have nowhere to go with prices this low, and 3870x2 isn't a real option with rv770 just around the corner.

I do think that rv770 is going to be strong and would probably buy one if Iwas going to be in the market in the next few months. However, I also think that gt200 is probably going to kick the crap out of 4870, with amd having to go back to the 4870x2 to become competitive on the high end.

btw, my last vid card was a 1950xt. I also just sold an old 128mb radeon 9800 pro a few months ago. I've owned more nvidia cards over the years than ati, probably by about 2:1, but I think that my personal ratio is probably pretty typical among enthusiast gamers.

fuad's like a fortune teller: "MIGHT" end up..."SHOULD" mean... the only truth in that article was the last sentence: At least we know it will end up being fast, but we still don?t know what Nvidia?s real answer is to this one.

Nope don't know anything about nvidia's new card. Probably because this thread is not about nvidia. If interested, start a sticky.

edit: 30+ pages of quality info here

We already know the specs though, most of the rumors have now become consistent with the specifications. Its the performance and release date that are still unknown.

I hope ATI pulls a core2 on nvidia's Athlon64, figuratively speaking.

Taken from the comments on that page

Hah! That would actually rock, because the situation isnt that different.. Nvidia has been sitting on its 8800 GTX for almost 2 years, and it would rock if they were bitten in the ass for not putting out something decent faster, just like AMD did

WTF I would think R700 would have like 960 Shaders?? Rv770 was suppose to have 480 Shaders last time i recall...!!!

If this is true i am selling my 3870 x2 asap!!!

That was 2 months ago. I don't think it holds any water.

Yea, I remember reading that article back then as well. Most of the rumors has changed since then.

Here's hoping ATI pulls off a nice card though. If not, GT200 for me.
