Why in the world would you want to take a 256bit bus + GDDR3 card and OC it? It is a waste of your time... Get a GDDR5 card and try to OC that.

People oc because they can. Rarely makes any difference in actual gaming, but 3dmock shows a measurable extension.

I have a feeling that vendors will likely go with gddr3 for their cards, and companies like sapphire and powercolor who put out those high factory overclocked versions will likely use gddr5 for those versions.

Honestly though, gddr3 is gonna play a big difference when comparing 4870 and 4850 cause from what I can tell the only difference between these card are the core/memory speeds.

I'm glad we will see a good fight between ATI and NV this time around, as the new ATI cards seem to perform better than expected. Many of us thought ATI would not touch NV performance until they release the 4870x2, but now even the 4870/4850 might compete nicely. Maybe not with the GTX280, but with the GTX260 (taking price into consideration ofc).

Some people are predicting a 30% performance increase with HD4850 vs HD4870. If that turns out to be true, we could have the HD4870 only 10% behind the GTX280 (predicted to be 40% faster than HD4850). In that case, the X2 will splatter the GTX280 all over the place!

That 4850 run averaged 19.6FPS with 4X AA, 29.7FPS with no AA, on high settings.

Wow, not too shaby I guess. My 2900Pro at 800MHz core and 1600MHz (512bit) memory manged about 25FPS @ 1680x1050 all settings at high no AA. Being that the 4850 has a good bit lower clock then my core, less memory bandwidth, it does pretty decent seeing that it averages about 5 more FPS at a higher resolution. I can't wait to get my hands on a 4870.

ronnn, the reviewer was a guy on xstremesystems forums, and he stated he was having problems getting the Benchmark to run under Vista, so he switched to XP.

quick question, do you guys think HIS will make an IceQ3 or similar version of the 4870? The 4870 does consume almost 2x the power of a 3870, so im not sure if the iceq3 cooler could handle it but just curious.

Oh thanks Hoofan 1, guess I should read. That would be lame if DX 10 performance is poor.

Unleash One TERA! ATI Version

Unleash One TERA! NV Version

Let's please keep blatant propaganda off of these forums. Now is not the time for it going in to a pair of launches, it's just going to make things ugly for everyone.

Am I correct in assuming that the

1. Ati 4850 will be faster than a 9800 GTX
2. Ati 4870 will be faster than a 9800GX2

Is anyone going to bite?

Not a bad deal, but shipping kills it. Would be cool to have a card a week before launch, but I'm looking for a 4870 and $245 shipped for a 4850 isn't too appealing.

I think its clear that AMD pushed back the launch of the 4850 to line it up with the 4870 launch. It seems that there are plenty of 4850's to go around; you can buy them on eBay and jimmyz at xtremesystems got his from a retailer as well. We haven't seen anything from the 4870s though. I hope they really are coming out on the 25th.

The HD 4850 will probably be close in performance, or be slightly faster, than a 9800GTX. It's certainly faster in Vantage, but we will have to see how that holds up in real games.

The HD 4870 will probably not be faster than a 9800GX2, I think you are asking too much from it. It will likely be very close to the 9800GX2 in Vantage Extreme performance, once again who knows how that will hold up in games. But I am pretty sure it will not be faster in areas where SLI scales well. The 9800GX2 is supposedly not so far away from the GTX 280 in performance, so I wouldn't expect the HD 4870 to compete with it.

Well if the 4850 does indeed sell for $179 like I've heard in some online stores it would be a worthy upgrade to my 8800 GT which I could sell to offset the price difference. So in the end it would probably cost me about $100 for the 4850

Rofl imagine. Never would some people I know (on a certain mobile forum, named P.......s; poster-censored lol) have believed that R770 would be the card to buy as replacement for an 8800GT.

if you oc the core then you see a decent amount of improvement, at least that's the case with my 3870.
