I hope it's 800 or the performance is there at least. That would put ATI back in the game and make NV get off their arses and not charge $650 for a graphics card!

Also more accessibility to faster cards for the average gamer means higher adoption rate of those cards ==> more faster performing hardware ==> developers start making better looking games.

* Latest GPU-Z confirms 800 shaders

GPU-Z does not detect that.

Check again. He tested at 1920 x 1200 with 4AA. It really makes a significant difference.

Very nice, thanks for benching the 4850's for us.

Here's Anand's own Crysis GTX 280 bench: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3334&p=11

The 4850's in Crossfire are faster then the 8800GT's in SLI by a good amount, and are a solid 10FPS, or > 20% faster then the GTX280. Regardless of whether the actual shader count is 480 or 800, the cards are fast. I assume Anand used "High" settings, I didn't see it mentioend anywhere. I know it's only one benchmark, but I think AMD has a winner here. Nvidia has won the last few rounds, I truely believe that AMD/ATI is going to be the better overall choice for most gamers this time around though.

You cant really tell if they are using high settings or very high settings, or if they are using fraps instead of the built in flyby.

I am pretty sure it high setting. VR-Zone did it with very high setting and they got approximately 20-21 fps @ 1920 x 1200.

This is my first experience with ATI. I've owned nV cards since the birth of Geforce. With that said, a quik review is in order..

These cards feature good build quality, with a single slot solid copper heatsink. In one pic below you'll notice exaust vents on the side as well as the back of the heatsink. Pics we've seen don't easily reveal these additional slots. I'd say half the exaust blows thru these, directed towards side panel. Be sure you have the area open for ventillation. You'll see I mounted a 120mm fan near the front of the card avoiding the exaust slots.

The fans never spun up past default speed (whatever that is). There are no fan speed adjustments within CCC. Overclocking beyond 675 caused 3DMark to lock up so I kept them at 660 core. This card will need aftermarket cooling for higher overclocks. They run pretty warm. With good airflow they're idling at 61c, load temps were about 74c. Under load, the area of the heatsink you can touch will burn your digits after about two seconds. They were very stable however, zero lockups after I went to 660. One neat thing, they throttle down to 500 core 750 mem apparently. See the CCC pic, current clock settings. During GPU activity this will go up to the preset overclock.

So far I'm impressed with the results! Perhaps final drivers will yield additional gains. And I'm sure we'll see third party oc and fan adjustments. How about the shaders? No adjustment?

I was ready to pull the trigger on a GTX 280 if it launched at $499. I also considered the 260, but decided to see what kind of performance I could get for $400 bucks with ATI. I plan to sell these off when 4870 X2 arrives. It looks like I may be seeing red for a while. nV, I've thrown a few thousand dollars your way. I still like you, but if ATI is pulling it together, I'm gonna support them for at least a generation.

Hope the info helps everyone. Here's to making an informed decision...

Nice Steel Six! Since everyone is comparing these to a GTX280, I was thinking of starting a new thread. Maybe do direct comparisons. Your 4850's and my single GTX280. I'd post the benches in this thread, but kinda not the place for it.

Thanks for the benches SteelSix! Those 4850's look like an awesome product. I await what the 4870 and 4870X2 will bring to the table given how good these 4850 results are. Might have to replace my workhorse 3850's for some of these ....I wonder if I can Crossfire them....

Thats weird that they don't go lower than that. The 38xx cards go down to 300mhz core when idle.

Thanks for testing

I really want to go ATI this round, but what about all this PhysX stuff Nvidia has going? Isn't there a lot of future titles coming out with this technology?

Thank you so much SteelSix

Now, if you could also include some Single 4850 benchmarks, it would be great

Waiting for more, thanks again

If 4870 delivers 80% of GTX 280's performance for half the price, wouldn't it be wiser to buy it instead of 280 or maybe CF setup for 600 bucks?

Not really, Nvidia would like you to believe this though, ATI has Havok anyway. By the time Physics becomes useful in games we will have DX11 which will probably bring it's own form of GPU physics.

Last time round I went for Crossfire 3850's for cheaper than a GTX/ GTS512 and I got similar and in some cases better performance. This time round I will do the same.
